extending firefox search

Lost, I sometimes think, behind all of the excitement that surrounds Firefox's thousands of available extensions and themes, is the extensibility of a key feature, Firefox Search.

Firefox 3 Search comes with a choice of several search services built right in, (Amazon, Answers, Creative Commons, EBay, Google, Wikipedia, and Yahoo,) and you can easily switch between those services, but that's just the beginning.

Head over to the Mycroft Project and take a gander at the 15,000 additional search services available for Firefox Search!

reactions, thoughts, comments, etc.

Worth a mention is also the ability to create your own (keyword searches, sadly not search-box searches) from any form field simply with a right-click - 'Add a Keyword for this Search...'

Isn't there an extension somewhere that let's you make search engine plugins from search boxes on the web?

Actually, OpenSearchFox is an extension that allows you to make your very own search engines. For example, I've created engines for addons.mozilla.com, images.google.com, whitepages reverse telephone number, download.com, etc. It's one of my favorite extensions and can be found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3698

OpenSearchFox is one of my favorite extensions, allowing me to create my very own search engines. You can find it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3698

Noteable as well is that sites can define their own search plugins for Firefox and provide them with a meta tag, the user can then easily add that new search engine with the search engine dropdown. Wikipedia for example does that, or dict.leo.org (my favourite German-English dictionary).

Thanks for OpenSearchFox, installing now :)

Add to Search Bar is smaller (19 KB download) and been around longer when it had a different name and did a lot more, before most aspects were somewhat incorporated into Firefox.

Don't forget that you can create a bookmark by right clicking on the search
box of a search form found on many web pages, and choose
"Add a keyword for this search" which is builtin to Firefox.

Hi, I am a part of a team which is developing a new web based product that will enhance web searching. We are interested to have an integration in Firefox web browser for our web based product in the form of an extension or more. With regards to the same, could I ask you for the contact of a person who we could talk to. Thank you very much in advance.
