the end, for real this time, of netscape client software
Netscape as a maker of client software is no more.
If you know anyone still using some version of Netscape, now's the time to reach out and help them move to Firefox. It's no longer a matter of browser preference; it's a matter of keeping those people safe online. There will be no more security updates for Netscape and the safest and easiest place for those people to move is clearly Firefox.

I feel like a part of my computing history has passed away.........it's where it all started for me.

I'm more concerned that in 2008 there are still people making websites with those stupid "best viewed in IE6 or NS7" messages... I've seen some around, wish I'd remembered the URL to them now.

Even worse probably is that some people actually are still using these old Netscape versions. For example, Netscape.de still offers NS 7.1 and it seems they won't stop this stupidity in the near future.. ;_;

Matt, Mozilla (and Firefox) where created from Netscape Communicator 4, so Netscape didn't die, it just was reborn under new name :).

You know, Asa, I mentioned this to Jay several weeks ago (time to start advising folks to migrate to FF) and he essentially lambasted me. "It will be perfectly safe to stick with NN9 for years to come (as many continue to use NS 7.2 without issues) provided you use common sense...etc. etc. etc." I found that ironic given the fact that many Netscape advocates always lit into MS since they were so slow in the past in getting out patches for IE. How do you say, speaking out of both sides of your mouth in a palatable way so that folks don't get all bent out of shape? Netscape is dead and done with. Time to move on... and that means moving to Firefox.
