firefox 3 beta 1 available

Firefox 3 Beta 1 is now available for your testing pleasures. This is the most thoroughly tested beta we've ever shipped. It's also available in 20 languages, a record for us for a Beta release.

You're gonna find that it's not only fast, nimble, and featureful, but such an advance from Firefox 2 that you won't want to go back.

There's lots new in this release that needs a good going over by a few hundred thousand beta testers. So, if you find problems, we're looking for your feedback so that we can get things into even better shape for Beta 2.

Finally! Just downloaded it to test it. It is working like a dream so far. The "Show windows and tabs from last time" and tab bar finally work well enough that I can drop Tab Mix Plus (W00t). I've been waiting for that day since Firefox 1 was released and I used Session Saver. The resizing of text and images works great so far. 5 of my current 36 extensions don't work, but this is a great way for me to test and see if I actually use them. So far I like :)

I have been using it since beta preview release 3. It's an awesome upgrade. Almost all of my extensions no longer work, but I am not really missing them. I love the visual improvements, the new bookmarks manager, intelligent guessing from the URL bar, and best of all, the full page zoom feature. It keeps getting better all the time! Thanks to everyone on the team for an amazing product, and I will be looking forward to the new visual button landing in beta 2 for Vista.

Downloaded and installed. As soon I'm done with all my current FF2 tabs (inc. posting this!) I can see what it's like. Having followed it in all the Moz blogs I have high expectations for some of the features - Places, above all.

It's a shame it doesn't come in British English though. :( I'm surprised no-one had translated it.

Congrats with getting this release out, will try it tonight. I was wondering about three features that were listed as desirable in early requirements on the wiki:
1) openid integration
2) ms cardspacec support
3) microformats UI support

I was kind of looking forward to all three but couldn't find any information in the release notes. Are these features still planned?

Alan - I'm sure there'll be an en-gb l18n before it goes final; there has been for every other Fx release since at least 1.0.

Mmm... None of my extensions are working :-(

Can you tell me how to force-install them? I mean Firebug, Web Developer, Color Picker, you know... that stuff...

In about:config set extensions.checkCompatibility to false.

Worse experience ever. Worse than Fx2a1, worse than that time when I installed that Fx2 nightly that crashed all the time. It would just eat all my RAM, which quickly made Windows page to disk and would lock up my computer by that point. I'm not sure what caused it though as it seemed random and can't do testing as this is on my work machine (WinXP SP2, 512MB RAM, classic theme).

At first it took up all my RAM when I started it with my Fx2 profile (with checkCompatibility turned off) so all the extensions were running. Went into Safe Mode after hard restarting my machine, turned off all extensions and yet it would still eat RAM. Turned on All-in-One sidebar and then it'd eat my RAM when I opened the bookmarks sidebar. I finally got some usage out of it when I created a brand new profile, but then it did it again when I was changing some bookmarks.

I don't feel comfortable making a bug report about this, as I cannot pinpoint the issue, but I have a feeling it has something to do with places.

Great to see downloaded files are made read-only to prompt save dialogues on edits.

I agree with Dubroy's comments around places: http://dubroy.com/blog/2007/11/20/firefox-3-beta-1-usability-impressions/

This is just too confusing. People actually get bookmarks. Im not sure we need the term star in there at all- whats wrong with the word bookmark? Isnt a bookmarked page and a starred page the same thing?

@Mr Lizard, in my short play of Fx3, I noticed that 'starred' bookmarks don't appear in the Bookmarks menu at all. You have to click again and change the save location to 'All Bookmarks,' the only way to access the starred items is by either typing them in the address bar or by going to the Places folder and then All Starred Items.

That said, I like the idea of Starring a website. It's really painless to just mark something you want to go to for future reference.

One thing about the star though is it seems counter-intuitive. When I click on something, I expect clicking on it again would turn it off. But with the 'star', you click once to turn it on and then again to change it. Not sure if many people would get that myself.

Is there a way to kill the 'Does not provide secure updates' stupidity that's restricting me from updating my extensions??? Why can't this be disabled in the preferences... been using Moz for many years and never heard of anyone being damaged without this... now we're all simply idiots who can't decide a 'safe' extension upgrade! Just trying to get my smoothwheel back... 'smoothscrolling is garbage.

Is there a way to turn this 'Places' thing off... It nice at showing anyone who hops on my computer every site i like to visit... but I don't need Firefox to tell ME the sites I like (nor anyone else)

OK, tried it at home. A lot better, feels a lot snappier too. Wonder what went wrong with work? Oh well, I'm not there for the next couple of weeks.

@jim: Ctrl+Shift+Del to delete your history. You can also go to Tools > Options > Privacy and have it delete your history when it gets closed.

This release are PACMAN Memory.
15 min after loading e some TABs opened and 250~300 MB RAM only for Firefox.

is true in release notes :
Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation.

????

Or is it for next beta ?

I couldn't get it to work with my developer extensions... :( I'll just have to wait for a RC...
