Opera is opening an office in Mountain View. This is awesome. I can't wait to meet more Opera folks and know that we've got another ally just down the road.
Welcome, Opera. Mountain View's where the Web was born. It's a fine town and I'd be thrilled to show you all around.

The Web was born in California? I would have guessed Geneva, with Chicago getting an honorable mention.

Well, welcome Opera.
And with all due respect to the great work of all the Mountain View based firms helping to advance the Internet, here's the real history of the WWW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Www#History

Well, so much for a figurative expression...and I suppose so much for Netscape, right? Geeze, people.

The Web was born in CERN, Switzerland.

The Web was born at CERN in Switzerland. Read some history books Asa.

I guess Assy (and his alter ego) here missed the "figurative expression" point. Twit.

spud, that figurative expression implies that the WWW started at or with Netscape, which is far from the truth. Saying that the WWW was born in Redmond would be just as (in)accurate, but I doubt any Microsoft spokesman would say such a thing, and I doubt if one did you'd mind people correcting it.
Maybe Asa was making a joke we don't get; I dunno.

I guess you're right and since we're being technically accurate, we should point out that "born" is a zoological term and therefore really shouldn't be applied to the Web. (Come to think of it, I find it surprising that I'm the first here to say so...maybe it's part of the joke, and I just thought he was being hospitable.) Thanks.

Well, if we want to deal with the semantics of born versus birth, perhaps we can support Asa's terminology. :)
For most people in the early 90's, at the beginning of the public or commercial Itnernet, Netscape Navigator (codename Mozilla, the parent of Mozilla) was how they first saw the web.
Sure, http and the web browser were created at CERN in Switzerland. They preceded Mosaic at the NCSA UIUC, which is the parent of Netscape. But I don't think it is unfair to say that for many, Netscape was were the [commerical, public access] web was born. :)
I know, it feels weird to say that. It may not be technically correct, but it is not inaccurate.

Hmm, where do we get those Fathead stickers again? ;-)
