Four years ago, the Phoenix name was retired in favor of the even-shorter-lived, Firebird. Thanks to Jason Kersey for coming up with our best and last name, Firefox.

Naming is hard. If you can avoid doing it, I recommend you do.

So it was Jason? I remember the old Phoenix icon, also designed by Jason. Or was it the Firebird icon?

Didn't know that either. That's a nice piece of Mozilla history and I couldn't find it in Mozilla Digital Memory Bank.

Kind of makes you wonder why his name was removed form the credits, doesn't it?

Ben Goodger recounts how the Firefox name was chosen in his interview at the Mozilla Digital Memory Bank. It's in the second and third paragraphs of the answer to "So kind of switching gears here, why do you think Mozilla in particular, Mozilla Firefox has been able to attract such a large number of users?"

That's something new for me. I recall that there was a 1982 movie called Firefox starring Clint Eastwood.
