If you've got more than a handful of readers, you're probably reading the occasional insult. If you've got a lot of readers, you might even have regular trolls. It's pretty easy to get used to all of that. If you're passionate about what you do, you're probably willing to endure quite a bit of ridicule.
But nobody should have to endure this.
It's disgusting and it's illegal and I hope that it's prosecuted and someone goes to jail.

thats sick. people are sick.
When bullying happens on the play ground it is wrong. When I heard of internet bashing kids in high school I was outraged: the internet must not be that kind of place. Same reason virtual child porn on second life should be illegal. We as mankind define who we are by our actions, on the street, to our loved ones and on the Internet!
This whole business you just posted is sick, wrong and devout of humanity. As the internet is another subset of interactions, once again these are social based and should be under social scrutiny.
Wordpress has blocked the page. Good.
Action: Shun these people out of the social network called the Internet. At home they must not have any friends...
Grrrrr
(angry and hurt right now)
Making threats is wrong, and, if the recipient is living in fear as a result, I agree that some action should be considered.
It's my opinion, however, that the resultant public gestures (e.g. canceling scheduled appearances), and stating, for the whole world to read, that "you live in fear" are designed to evoke a financial settlement, vis-a-vis civil litigation.
Show me the bills (from multiple visits to a counselor)...
You want to see the bills. You think that it's a publicity stunt. But the fact is, you don't know and THAT is critical. This woman has received death threats. If she were harmed what would be your response? "Oh, I guess I was wrong. Sorry." Yeah, you'd be sorry alright and then you'd be on with the next order of business completely dismissing the tragedy of person's life damaged perhaps forever. The point is, in these days in which we live we must take ALL threats seriously. If she believes her life has been threatened, and there is every indication that it has been (evidently the police seem to think so), then she has the right to take measures that will reassure her of her safety. What YOU happen to think is reasonable is irrelevant. Who are you to determine how another should act? Are you a mother? Are you a woman? No? Then perhaps you should try and put yourself into her shoes and see things from her perspective. I took the time to read through most of the comments on the site to which Asa linked and was saddened to see a few insensitive persons make similar comments. Thankfully the vast majority are thinking, compassionate people who extend both sympathy and understanding to Kathy. Generally I don't make my views on such things public, but your insensitive, boorish comment deserved a response.
Hey, that's a bummer, really. Um, this is more of a feature request for Thunderbird though. Would Mozilla consider rolling in Gaim and VoIP into Thunderbird contacts?
Otherwise I see a big need to fork Thunderbird and do this then rename it.
Thunderbird is falling behind. Email is getting old, and it's time that thunderbird be turned into a full blown communicator, VoIP, video, chat ect...
I'm of course talking about the Linux version.
Thanks Asa, and please get somebody to work on this before the rest of the community has to. Thunderbird is a great email and news program but it needs to expand right about now.
You're right, Asa. The stuff you put up with on your blog's more or less harmless. I'd know, I've had to put up with the sort of thing myself.
But those people really are fscked in the head. I hope something's being done by the ISPs carrying their traffic to help hunt them down and catch them. People like that shouldn't be allowed near society at all, let alone the internet.
