new addons site public preview

The web dev team have just announced that the next generation addons site is now available for preview and feedback. New features include improved l10n, a better review system, threaded discussions, a unified login for developers and users, and improved search.

Check it out and stay tuned for new locales coming online, new developer tools, a dramatic improvement to the add-ons submission and review process, and more.

While I encourage keeping everything fresh and up-to-date... I'm not really seeing anything dramatically different or improved about this new design. Thats not meant as a slam because the old site was just fine, and maybe I'm just not looking hard enough, but basically is it just that a few things just got moved around a tiny bit?

I had basically stopped visiting the old version of the site unless someone linked directly to an extension.

The new version doesn't look like it solves all the problems the old site had, but at a minimum search seems to have gotten a major improvement. I also do like the new look, even if it is mostly just "moving things around".

Based on the blog announcement, it also looks like a lot of what was done is behind-the-scenes cleanup and improved lIOn ability.

A couple of my honest thoughts here.

Really not sure I like the navigation panel over on the right.

Should things not read from left-to-right?

Also, the 'What are add-ons' section- is the bottom of the page the best place for it?

When I landed on the page, the first thing I noticed was the green download button. But this is of course only for the recommended add-on. A fresh visitor to the site, *who has no idea what on earth an add-on is*, may think they need to click this big green 'download me!' button in order to install add-ons. Remember- first time visitors likely have no idea what this is all about.

The Extensions page is just too full of links to make it useful for a first time visitor. I wouldn't know where to look first. It reminds me of yahoo.com- link pollution.

That said, it's a preview, and I'm sure things will change. I'll have a read through the wiki and see what comments are already there, and maybe add mine if these issues haven't yet been raised.

Yes, I agree with Mr Lizard.
1) I'd like to see a visible (unlike almost hidden in previous design) "extension home" link.
2) Home index gives too much emphasis on the recommended extension as opposed to the extension categories, instructions & faq for first time visitors.
3) Speaking of which... there are no instructions, faq, or anything!

But yes... great improvement on localization! That was very much needed.
Will the extension description be available in multiple languages as well? That would make it great.

The single biggest deficiency of the current site is the search feature. One obvious problem with it is searching for an extension by name. It will often be a fair way down in the results list, rather than the first result as it should be.

Unfortunately the test site isn't populated with any extensions, so it's hard to test it properly.

AMO is useless in any form until all the toolbars are removed from the site, or at least placed into its own section so that if someone wants a toolbar they can look there without the damn things taking over AMO.

It is better...

The search actually works! (previously searching for certain add-ons didn't work by keyword)

That said, do a search now, for "zilla" (minus the quotes) and look at the pagination section... there's a bug.

"Results: 4
 previous 1 next
Results per page: 2 5"

The results per page, should not have a link to page 2, if there isn't one, and I have no idea what the 5 is.

The other issue (which existed before also), is that there is no easy way to limit results to only Firefox extensions, or only Thunderbird extensions etc.

In particular, searching for Thunderbird was tricky, as it would often return results that were *NOT* applicable to Thunderbird at all.

I think a simple set of checkboxes (that the site remembers while you surf) would be fine.

[_] All Mozilla Products
[_] Firefox [x] Thunderbird [_] Camino [_] Sunbird etc.

cheers,
steve

"and improved search." where? nah but really i wish the search engine would work like google, or support *, and regular expressions.

search engine
1. the preview images need to be clickable to the extension page, or screenshot with link to the extension page
2. the results should show the "install now" button
3. the results should so the rating and last user opinion.
4. suggestions based on user search keywords, e.g tab session = suggest tabmixplus along with results
5. advanced search

extension page
1. the preview images should be clickable to larger screen shot!
2. on an extensions homepage, the search bar should not be missing.
3. should have a suggested extensions based on user ratings not editors.

thats my opinion, i'm all for usability, rather than looks

another thing, on a extension page it says by '[author name]' and links to their homepage, but in search results it says by '[author name]' and it links to their addons.mozilla.org page, i think their should be two links; one leading to homepage, and one leading to their addons page.

oh and my mind is racing a million miles an hour so if i sound to demanding, it's just the way i wrote it.
