parallels coherence

The latest beta of Parallels Desktop for Mac introduces, among other features, something called Coherence. Coherence is a mode where the user doesn't have to worry about switching desktops between Mac and Windows. Apps from both co-exist on the same desktop. The user has easy access to both the Dock and the Windows Start menu and Taskbar. There are still some minor issues to be worked out, but combined with the fairly solid drag and drop support between Mac and WIndows, this is very nearly my perfect desktop experience.

reactions, thoughts, comments, etc.

agreed. I discovered last night that my new favorite Mac browser is Windows Firefox 2 running in Parallels Coherence. It is faster than Mac Firefox, Camino, and Safari (the interface is faster, not necessarily the rendering and all that).

The main thing missing from the Coherence experience is the ability to be able to create shortcuts (Dock icons) to individual Windows/Coherence apps, instead of dropping into Parallels and opening the apps via the taskbar.

Given all this, though, I find virtually no reason to buy a PC again, even as a secondary or backup computer.

Yea, that's how WINE usually works. It used to be that not all apps would work in that mode, but I haven't actually used the old desktop mode in ages.

it's the thing that would get me to consider a mac. and i can still dualboot to play a windows game. One problem: i would like something like a Mac Pro but not so powerful and expensive.

I'm impressed at the focus this app is getting from it's developers. They have proved they are committed to making this one of the best apps available for OS X.

The fact that they are making the process of running Windows software on a Mac as painless as possible fully justifies its £45 asking price, in my opinion.
