It will be Firefox 2 v1.0.1

Ah, Firefox 2 SP1 (LOL ;o) that is why you guys got some cake...

we'll continue to call this release Firefox 2. The updates will still be labeled 2.0.x, but as far as the user-facing name, it will be Firefox 2.

Thanks Asa for making it clear, I was just kidding...

For consistency you need to change the "About" window, the install files and the install screens - they all read Firefox 2.0

Asa: Bsmedberg told me some time ago that the security/stability releases would be of the form 2.0.0.x, and as such add-on developers have been setting their maxversions to 2.0.0.* .. so what is the version number format going to be?
Posted by: Cameron | October 27, 2006 1:33 AM
Christian, it makes sense for the About window to say Firefox 2.0, so users can be reasonably certain that they don't have any updates.

On both Windows and Ubuntu 6.10, the name at the top of the window says "Mozilla Firefox". No '2'. Is this a bug, now?

The product is called Firefox. It's version 2.0. It says so in the About dialogue, the UA string... pretty much everywhere.
So when people are talking about the release they should say Firefox 2, but when talking about the product, it's Firefox 2.0?
This all seems very petty.

Can we go a release without changing the numbering scheme? Please?
Posted by: Jason Barnabe | October 27, 2006 6:51 AM
Clever marketing decision. :) The .0 creates a bad impression on the end user.
If they called it Firefox 2 and then suddenly called the next release Firefox 2.0.1, the user would understand that .0 is implicit in the first name, and the effect would still be bad. But the way they're doing it, the effect is completely gone, as there is no difference in the name between various dot releases.

When Mozilla ends up fighting off the confusion about "I keep getting updated but my version number changes", they will realize it would have been best to just accept the negativity about .0
I'm with Jason. Phoenix is the browser without a name.

So as not to be confused with Web 2.0? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Hey, I don't know about losing the decimal.
Using 2.0 is a fair warning --- I don't worry about FF closing unexpectedly several times an hour so far (and failing to send a Talkback report most of the time) because
-- I know I'm using a ".0" release, so I don't expect it to work yet, and
-- I see the bugs listed so someone's got to be working on it, oh, and
-- The "resume" feature works, so it's like "oh, I dropped your soup, here's a fresh bowl" -- not graceful, but good enough service.
Could Resume be improved to include an option to "send what Trackback should have sent since it seems not to have noticed the browser crash"?

Yeah I doesn't matter what the version is because no body looks at the about screen and it updates automatically without user input.
Mozilla releases it by 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 so of course they can't change 2.X!
