firebug sheds light on web apps

The incomparable Joe Hewitt (of early Firefox fame, and the man that created Mozilla's beloved Dom Inspector) has just released a new version of FireBug.

FireBug, in case you didn't know, "lets you explore the far corners of the DOM by keyboard or mouse. All of the tools you need to poke, prod, and monitor your JavaScript, CSS, HTML and Ajax are brought together into one seamless experience, including an error console, command line, and a variety of fun inspectors."

This new version ads a host of new features and turns Firefox into the ultimate web app development and debugging tool. You can read about what's new in FireBug 0.3 over at JoeHewitt.com.

(oh, and check out Joe's slick comment system. sexy blog, dude.)

Oh, man.... I LOOOOOVE Firebug!!! =]

Firebug is just G-dly. I agree 100%!

Still, it would be nice if Venkman got some love too. I don't know. Maybe with Firebug no one needs Venkman anymore... But you can't set breakpoints in Firebug, can you? Yet, Venkman aside, Firebug is truly innovative and perfect for web development.

While MS is still trying to catch up with Dom Inspector and Web Developer, Firebug is a killer extension.
Actually, I can hardly think of sb. prefering Dom Inspector over Firebug. I think Firefox 2 should ship with Firebug.

DOM Inspector allows you to create, modify, and delete DOM elements and styles (with some limitations). While FireBug is incredibly cool, it doesn't seem to support this level of editing, which I find very useful at times. So, while I wouldn't say I prefer DOM Inspector, it's definitely staying in my toolbox for now (along with Venkman).

You're right, editing is missing there. But at least the markup attributes are editable. And as there's the new 'Inspector' tab, it has the potential to replace Dom Inspector entirely.

Venkman, DOM Inspector, Firebug, Console^2 are all great tools. Firefox is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Web development. ;-)
