yahoo! maps beta
It looks like Yahoo!'s made some really nice improvements to their mapping app. Check it out. It's all Flash-based, I guess.

everytime you drag it gets added to the browser history x_x
whilst this is nicer than Googlemaps, its success may depend on its API. Hackers are getting the word out by implementing googlemaps in websites and in new interesting ways.

I like all the new nice features. However, the loading speed here is not as good as G-Map...

I get some really strange behaviour in Firefox (1.5 RC1) after rapidly zooming in and out using the scrollwheel. It still works, it just doesn't respond to certain actions anymore, and I need to close it manually through the task manager.

Eh, not bad but I'm not into the Flash/Flex thing. Google's JS/AJAX based setup is more my taste. Faster to load and drag, too.
Interesting how Yahoo!, Microsoft, et al seem to be constantly scrambling to follow in Google's footsteps these days.

Flash is one of the most overlooked pieces of web technology in my opinion. With flash 8 the only thing it won't let you build (with any sort of performance) is 3D apps. You could make a word clone in it, and it would look and act convincing. Heck, you could build firefox in flash if you really wanted to. It's definitely more powerful than AJAX. I speak from experience. I've built a CAD application in flash. That would have been impossible with AJAX.
Don't get me wrong, I only use flash when I have to, but I'm glad yahoo doesn't dismiss it outright like google seems to do, because there are situations where it really is the best tech for the job.
