help with a clear private data bug

We're down to the final days of the Firefox 1.5 release cycle and we've run into a difficult to reproduce (which means difficult to fix) problem with the new Clear Private Data feature.

Some users are reporting that they're seeing the confirmation dailog on startup rather than (or in addition to?) on shutdown. If you can reproduce this problem and can help us understand the necessary steps and settings to reproduce the problem, please let me know. Thanks.

The Bugzilla report is bug 314755.

I can confirm I see this with RC1 and Beta 2.

Did not happen with Beta 1 or prior.

Running Windows 2000.

hmmmmm does not answer Asa's request to identify the steps or events that took place prior to this Startup Erase private data invitation..... Nope i possitively never seen this in eather the BETA's or the RC1.

Now the other noted issue of login data / password storage or rather non-storage.....i have experienbced this pre-beta 1...when i installed that, it went and still has not regressed. https pages i think are by default not stored...never tried to store them anyway.

hasta la pasta....now where did the name dotzler come from....almost germanic origin....the now directy associated and sponsoring google just confirmed it...http://www.ancestry.com/search/SurnamePage.aspx?html=b&ln=Dotzler&sourcecode=13304

....German: habitational name from a place called Dotzlar, near Wittgenstein, Hesse.

ASA another interesting part...from my cinematografic days it indicated the seinsitiviy of film to light exposure.....well dont think he's shy ;>)

This was reported before and turns out it was an issue with 'adblock' extension.

Peter(6) reported on 8/26/05
that AdBlock Plus version: 0.5.9.1 was causing this issue as well..

It would help if you specified WHICH bug you are seeing :-)

Firefox no longer remembers my passwords. It's freaking me out. Cookies work fine, but it never remembers my passwords, and I *know* that that setting is ON in my Preferences! However, I'm using Portable Firefox 1.5RC1, so IDK what is exactly at fault.

im not using portable...

Hi,

I can reproduce it indeed. I'm running build 20051025 (RC1 I think) and I did the following :

Go to Tools,
Select Options...
Select Privacy
Click on Settings button
Select the checkbox "Clear private data when closing firefox"...

I guess this is the usual way but I'm not sure it's the only one.

Now I close FF and it doesn't ask me to clear private data
After that I started FF and there it asked me to clear private data.

Cheers,

Bruno

The steps I took to reproduce it are exactly as Bruno states above (on Windows XP). I only followed those steps once but everytime I started RC1 , I t the confirmation dailog. I had Adblock 0.5.2.039 installed and as soon as I uninstalled it, the problem disappeared.
I then created a test profile with no extensions to try to reproduce it but it doesn't seem to occur. It seems to be definitely related to at least the Ad block extension. One person (juergen) seems to be able to reproduce it without adblock. Perhaps if juergen listed any other extensions that are installed we might be able to rule them out or if he creates a new profile and tries on that ?

Hi,
I'm able to reproduce this bug. I had Firefox 1.5 B2, received the automated update to RC1. I have Adblock 0.5.2.039 installed and enabled.

When I close Firefox, the process remains running in the Win XP task manager/processes.

I'm running win xp home edition, zone alarm, nod32, ad-aware (ad-watch)...

hope i have helped you guys.

yes i can reproduce the bug exactly as bruno stated on win xp sp2. i uninstalled adblock 0.5.2.039 and it worked.

Posted by: phil | November 8, 2005 5:48 AM

You guys using adblock 0.5.2.039 should update to 0.5.2.054 here http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic.php?t=2264

Posted by: koan | November 8, 2005 6:08 AM

thanks for that koan. i find this very confusing. from what i can see in the thread we have AdBlock (0.5.2.039), AdBlock with bug fixes (0.5.2.054 which is not an official release), AdBlock Plus, and AdBlock 0.6 is currently under development... ouch!!!

From what I can tell the version on Mozilla's site is 0.5.2.039, it should probably be marked as incompatible with ff 1.5 because
1. it causes a problem in 1.5rc
2. most people download their extensions from mozilla and won't bother looking through forums for an updated version, hence most people will use 0.5.2.039

Bug 302087, "Inadequate warning before Profile Manager deletes non-Mozilla files", gives a whole new meaning to "clearing private data", since users tend to lose either their entire "My Documents" folder or everything on their desktop. I don't suppose you'd be interested, but here's yet another victim: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=1842057#1842057 .

Unlike many victims, this one fell victim when the Profile Manager popped up, so ending that popup behavior would have saved him. Unfortunately, most users seem to err voluntarily, so we can expect these severe data losses to continue in version 1.5.

It's too bad, it would be so easy to fix with a newline character and a line of bold text. Even the damage to the reputation of Firefox could be mitigated with a few words about plans to fix it.

Phil, I hear you.

I don't know why they don't just update the adblock page on the mozilla extensions page. I think it's because the guy doing the updates is not the project lead and the rest of the "adblock crew" are MIA?

I believe the "0.5.2.054" is his unofficial bugfix maintenance release for the original 0.5.2.039 "adblock crew" version.

0.5.10 and 0.6 are his own branches that start to diverge and add additional features (which unitl recently were very unstable).

(Warning: all of the information above is pure conjecture :)

I too had the problem of "Clear Private Data" showing up at launch. Checking task manager I saw that I had five instances of Fx running, yet I closed down Fx each time which should shut down those processes, instead I had to go in and end task on each one. When I removed Adblock 0.5.039 "Clear Private Data" showed up at shutdown and no more multiple runnings of Fx.

AdBlock 0.5.039, is still the release one see's on the mozilla extension page. AdBlock Plus's homepage (I think) talks about this problem and has been fixed I'm running AdBlock Plus 0.5.10 with no errors that i've noticed.

I'd seriously think about removing AdBlock 0.5.039 from the Mozilla Update - Extensions page.

Windows XP SP2, Firefox 1.5rc1, Adblock Plus 0.5.10.

^^^ replace Adblock 0.5.039 with Adblock 0.5.2.039 ugh, hate it when I make mistakes like that.

Posted by: Cam | November 8, 2005 12:16 PM

No how about putting the fixed version up. @!#!#!@@# put the fixed one up what is so hard about that? http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic.php?t=2264
no one will have to report problema and be idiots so they rate the program a 0, I rate it a 5+

Posted by: ddd | November 8, 2005 1:04 PM

I agree, the adblock extension shoud be replaced by Adblock Plus in AMO. Why does nobody take care of that??

Posted by: Barend | November 8, 2005 2:51 PM

Because those are in fact different projects, and there's ongoing development of Adblock 0.6.

Posted by: hakubo | November 8, 2005 2:57 PM

The adblock project has not had any development at all for 2 years now . See their website : the brach is tested solely under mozilla 1.3.1. ...
