Last week I was talking with Scott MacGregor about what I thought was a missing feature in Thunderbird -- the ability to forward several messages as one. We agreed that the feature would be useful and I said I'd file a report. The next day, David Bienvenu, the other Thunderbird lead, exlpained to me and Scott that this was already possible. The trick is that you have to forward as attachment.
So, if you're like me and you've set your default for forwarding to "Inline", and you want to forward a conversation or other series of emails, just control select the various messages, go to the Message menu and click on Forward As, then select Attachment.
If you've got other nifty Thunderbird tips, please share them here.

I'm looking for a TB workaround on (not) forgetting to attach attachments... Something which checks if there is an attachment, when there is the word "attached" or something similiar mentioned in the message body... Any ideas? There is already a RFE bug filed (bug 244455)...

Off-topic: all the <kbd> tags in paragraph 2 are closed incorrectly. Depending on how your browser handles the residual style problem, it either makes the entire sentence monospaced (Firefox, Konqueror)...or the rest of the page (Opera).

Is there any way to disable automatic message opening (like when I delete an e-mail, it opens the next one down)? Also, is there a way to set it up so that you need to double-click to read a message?
Off topic: Is there a way to get Firefox to prompt you when a cookie wants to be set (not unlike the IE *gasp* prompt for cookies option, where I also have the option to always allow/deny a cookie)?
Sorry for all of the questions!

@A Person: set Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cookies -> Keep cookies: "Ask me every time." Then you'll be prompted to accept/deny each individual cookie.

I don't know. Selecting multiple messages and clicking the forward button would be more intunitive and easy. I thought the target was making it easier, rather than spreading out software where you need to buy a book to understand it :P

Forward few mails in one is a good idea.
My suggestion for new tip is forward as HTML (shift+forward) like works with reply as HTML (shift+reply).

Take your pick:
- Digitally signing newsgroup posts
- Smooth Scrolling in Thunderbird
- Making Thunderbird use Google Maps
- Gmail labels in Thunderbird
- Changing the link colours in Thunderbird

no tips today, but I wish I could talk with Scott MacGregor ... there's a feature I'd really like to see:

A Person: To require double-click, press F8 (this turns off the message pane).

Well, I normally use drag & drop for that. On the other hand, if anyone can tell me how to set my default e-mail format to "plain text" but yet be able to switch to HTML when I need to, I'll be in awe.

Block, did you file a bug on it? ;-)

James, just change your pref to plaintext and then hold "Shift" when you click the compose button.
(shift toggles that choice)

Two useful tips so far, more than I'd expected. I love it, altho I wish it didn't happen. In a perfect app, everything should be obvious.

If I'm not mistaken, the feature Asa is talking about was entered by me in 2001 as a (still open) RFE : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84131">https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84131">https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84131">https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84131">https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84131

Asa, if you need tip from developer how to do something in end-user targeted product, you certainly discover UI with bad-design.

You can also select the messages and right-click, there's an "forward as attachment" menu item. I think context menu is an easiest way to forward, move and so on, messages

I like the new filters that are coming with TB 1.5 beta 2 but one thing I would like that I don't know how to do is to have messages automatically printed based on a filter condition.
Any help on this?

If you are on Windows, go to Start-> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Click on Mozilla Thunderbird and then on Change/Remove. Click Yes to everything that follows.

Yeah, I have used it to export messages as .eml files (that is additional tip BTW).
Unfortunatly, with exporting many of the messages, I saw several bugs and reported them - currently I remember that there are huge problems if subject contains Unicode letters.

Dear Mr. Asa Dotzler
Regarding your presentation in Korea, I've sent you email yesterday. But I think you check you e-mail requently as much as blog, just like others.
So please, check your mail box ^^*

Does anyone know if the bug that limits the suggested auto-complete addresses in the Mac version of Thunderbird is on anyone's to-do list?
