google toolbar for firefox leaves beta
The Google Toolbar for Firefox has exited beta. The super slick part of the updated release is you can customize where the buttons live in Firefox's UI. More at the google blog. Oh, and it's got Google Suggests built in (not available for the IE version, I understand.)
reactions, thoughts, comments, etc.
Whooo, finally I can move the spellchecker button elsewhere and hide the google toolbar. :-D

Too bad it doesn't support the 1.5 beta. I've got it hacked with Nightly Tester Tools, but it would be nice if they can get it updated for us crazy people hunting bugs.

Or not. I uncheck View > Toolbars > Google Toolbar but it reappears whenever I open a new browser window.

Jesse: Maybe you want the Pagerank Extension? It displays Pagerank in the status bar.

Ditto! Best thing about this toolbar is that it's spell checking is far superior to spellbound. Only reason I use it. Though I'd rather use right click and context menu to start it. This is almost as good though.

Ahem. You can move SearchStatus around too - it gets the PageRank, Alexa ranking & stats and provides backwards links and keyword density reporting, amongest many other search related features. That spell checking feature is worth borrowing from Google, perhaps... I must take a closer look.

hard to install on a nightly build.
had to use IE to download it, and in the end it still failed because "signing could not be verified". I wanted to hack it a bit to make it work, then I realized i couldn't be assed to.

It is possible to run it on 1.5beta by adding app.extensions.version in about:config, and set 1.0.7 as value. Even if it seems to work perfectly on my configuration, this is a kind of a hack, so be careful.

I prefer Customize Google extension in order to enhance the Google main page with Google Suggest feature, beside the others.

One nice touch would be if the resize grippie between the Google logo and the search field was only visible when hovering the mouse over the toolbars. That would look cleaner and would still keep the usability.
The built-in search field in Firefox should include this resize grippie by the way.

Jesse, that might be bug 215489.

Minor: I don't think you need a plural S on Suggest, and I'm almost certain that's not how "availability" is spelled. Thanx.

I used the nightly tester tools to install google toolbar extension in 1.5b1, but the spellchecker is broken. :-(
At least it still work under 1.0.7.

David having the resize grippie auto show onMouseOver hurts usability. The discoverablity of the feature goes WAY down. I liken your suggestion to the Microsoft Office hidden menu items, which diserve a horrible bloody death.

Simplex, I don't agree. You would hover the mouse over the search field when you're about to search for something. Also, the grippie would be visible as long as the cursor focuses the text field.
It's not comparable to the Office menus, which are hidden even when you're trying to use them.

I am having a problem with google toolbar. It is suppressing the autocomplete functionality of firefox. Whenever i disabled it, autocomplete starts working again. Is there a work around taht i could use firefox's inherent autocomplete without having to remove the google toolbar??
