flickrbar firefox extension

I just ran across this very slick little toolbar called the FlickrBar™. It's got a simple search field that can search tags, people, and groups plus a comments notification and a messages notification.

I have one feature request. They should add a way to drag flickr photos to the toolbar (or at least references to the photos) so that you can easily drag and drop photos from flickr into different web based applications like blogs or forums or whatnot.

update: looks like the extension was removed due to a bug. more info here.

update2: if you just gotta have a flicker extension today, try FlickrFox, a nice Flickr sidebar extension for Firefox.

"Download removed at the request of Flickr. More to come."

Did you give them a bit too much publicity?

Typical, you design a program which does no harm and they take it offline! Just like IE7 on loads of sites

No.
the issue here is that the extension pings 6 pages on flickr's servers every 10 seconds.

That means you are downloading 36 of Flickr's whole pages every minute.. that is a lot of bandwidth. Imagine 1,000 people making 36 hits every minute.

I would recommend everyone uninstalls this extension util the author posts a fix.

This isn't about flickr being rude, it's about their bandwidth and the extension authors not using their API's and making the really bad mistake of this 10 second rule

Ah. 1 minute seems reasonable...

Glad you like it, Asa -- I'm the Mozilla Update editor who approved it a few days ago...unfortunately, it appears to have been removed from UMO as well. I wonder why -- Flickr gives active support to FlickrFox, a sidebar that shows photostreams, and many other third-party apps that use the public Flickr API.

Oh, now I see why -- thanks MadMatt.

Hi there.

I'm the project manager of FlickrBar. We're working on getting everything fixed and hope to have a new version out very soon. Our only issue is Flickr is still blocking users from using it.

@MarbleHeadMan: I removed the version that was posted so that it could not be downloaded anymore (at Flickr's request). If you could re-approve when the new version comes (if you feel it's worthy), I would be more than appreciative.

Regards,

Kevin Delaney
Project Manager, FlickrBar
