Jakob Perry, creator of the wonderfully designed Firefox Switch site, dropped a note in the comments to let us know about the awesome Firefox Switch site. The Firefox Switch site is seriously cool. Everyone go check it out now. I said now! ;-)
This is the kind of high-quality content and design that we should have in the official website. Great work Jakob! You're my featured site of the day!
It's a clone of Apple's own Switch site. While I agree that it is effective and inviting, it's just that -- a clone. Firefox could benefit greatly from something similar, but I truly hesitate to associate with something that is, at its base, a rip. Besides, you shouldn't be so quick to knock Mozilla's current site. Sure, it could use some improvements, but I'd say Dave Shea did a fine job with it.
Nice graphics... Let's spread the words!
the problem of this page is the following one : Who are we talking to ?
While reading the whole page we can say that main users are targeted with this page. But it's titled "Want to support Webstandards ? Get Firefox !". Main users don't even know what webstandards are and don't really care about it. The title should focus on the usability etc...
The rest of the page is simply perfect ! :-)
Mmm I have just seen that the title was randomly displayed on the page. I still don't think that the webstandard topic is not at its place...
It's not a clone, it's a parody, and parodies are protected from copyright infrigment, lets not forget that ;-)
Thats fantastic, really good idea. Except it doesn't render properley on firefox under linux....
The corresponding Apple Switch site is http://www.apple.com/switch/
It's great evangelism. Another way to evangelise is to use the StumbleUpon extension to publicise Firefox with user comments against sites like this.
Asa, that site rocks! Too cool. Thanks for the info, I'll be passing it on as well!
Thanks for the comments. I don't believe the site is 'ripping' off Apple; it is a spoof, like I said in my post on mozillazine. However, I've tweaked, and in my opinion, improved many flaws the Apple site has (IE all images, no real CSS).
I haven't had a chance to test this on the mac, but supposedly Safari is having some troubles.. Its working fine for me on Firefox .8 in Linux. I'll upgrade and see if it causes any issues.
As for the webstandards bit--I'm hoping that this site will also reach Web Developers who many of which don't validate their websites or even test their sites in more than IE. Although testing all browsers is impossible, I'm hoping that the web standards piece will convince IE Web developers to notice Firefox.
I'm working hard to get the site in a fairly functional state before I leave on my trip.. If you have any other site issues, please let me know: japerry@fcdnet.org
Again, thank you for the support!
