fc2t2

Today I installed Fedora Core 2 Test 2. The install went mostly OK with only one minor glitch in picking packages.

After install, I experienced consistent crashes trying to adjust the clock applet preferences and the iTunes knockoff crashed when I attempted to play some music it had imported from one of my audio CDs. I had some difficulties mounting and unmounting my USB keychain flash memory device but that's mostly resolved.

OK, that's the bad news. The good news is that it's fast. It feels considerably faster than FC1. I also had very little difficulty adding a few more applications and using those. I got Mozilla and Firefox installed without any problems, even got JRE 1.5 beta and RealPlayer both installed without any difficulty.

Now all I really need is driver support for my Broadcom integrated wireless and a couple of crash bug fixes and I'll be ready to move back to linux as my primary OS.

Have any of you tried FC2T2? What do you think so far?

Hi Asa

Normally I read your blog using FireFox and RSS Reader, but in the last couple of days RSS Reader have started to say "Error: XML Parse Error" when I hit your page.

Trying to validate the page using "Redland RSS 1.0 Validator and Viewer" gives the following:

Results of RSS 1.0 Validation
Errors

line 66 - XML parser error - Opening and ending tag mismatch: content:encoded and a
line 66 - XML parser error - Sequence ']]>' not allowed in content
line 66 - XML parser error - detected an error in element content

Maybe you should have a look at it :-)

Hi Asa,

I actually upgraded from FC2-test1 to FC2-test2. I was really expecting it to get all fouled up, at which point I would reinstall FC2-test2 from scratch. As it turns out, everything went very smoothly.

FC2-test2 is definitely faster than FC2-test1, I agree. Nautilus in particular really screams. I have had some issues with my screensaver under test2 that I have yet to figure out. Rhythmbox (is that the iTunes clone you mentioned?) was crashing for me but once I grabbed the update from yum it works without a problem.

I also installed Firefox from fedora.us but I didn't see a Thunderbird package... anybody know of one? I got the tarball and installed from there but if there is a package it would be even better.

Now you've tempted me to install Core 2, just a week or so after I got Core 1 installed and running.... argh...

I tried to install FC2T1 but I had too many problems with the CDs.. I desperately need a new computer.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 with a Broadcom network interface. The only way to get it working is to use something called driverloader, which loads your windows driver and sets up a wireless internet. Unfortunately it's not free and it's not working the the free alternative (ndiswrapper).
