Happy birthday, Blake. If your third decade is as productive as your second was, we're all in for some good times on the web.
Posted by asa at June 12, 2005 04:32 PMWhat does Blake work on at Mozilla? And when is the 2ND Alpha release of Firefox 1.1 (Deer Park) coming out?
Posted by: Alex on June 12, 2005 04:48 PMAlex: Blake doesn't work at Mozilla. He has done work on various bits of Firefox in the past (the find toolbar as a recent example), and was contracted to do some work, but currently he's busy setting up his own business.
Latest indication of alpha 2 I've seen was in the meeting minutes from last week, when they thought it might be "3-4 weeks" away. So, it'll be in a few weeks, depending on when the blockers are done with.
It seems odd to promote your blog for Firefox info when you're asking stuff like this - I just looked at your blog and I don't see any info on there that isn't more easily available elsewhere.

I'd agree with that any day. I was this close ->| |

Posted by: David Naylor on June 12, 2005 05:21 PMPeople who continually post links to their blogs in every reply annoy me. It's almost as though you were replying here, on a popular blog, just so you can promote your own. Alex is almost as bad as another repeat offender.</rant>
And, er, just so my post isn't completely off-topic, Happy Birthday Blake!
Posted by: Gavin Sharp on June 12, 2005 05:55 PMAlex, the points brought up by the other comments here seem pretty legitimate. Please stop. Thanks.
Posted by: Asa Dotzler on June 12, 2005 06:09 PMWho cares about blake. How old is Ben -- He is the real star!
Posted by: bob example on June 12, 2005 10:27 PMGosh!
We forgot about your birthday, Asa.
It was on June 5...
'Tis better then never!
My congratulations to you, Asa, and only the best wishes!
Hey, I just had a question (or two). For my blog, well I do write a lot about Firefox, it just happens that Sat. and Sun. there was nothing written about Firefox. Thank you for answering my questions. As for me promoting my blog, I never thought of that, it asked for my URL for a comment and I put it there. Sorry for any...trouble caused.

Your personal opinion regarding Blake, seems a bit harsh in my view, sure you have a right to think as you see fit. But perhaps you should consider being a bit kinder to someone who gave a lot of his own time to contribute to help make something you care about. (It's called pi**ing down the neck of the shoulders your standing on)(or maybe he's stolen your girlfriend in the past or something who knows!)
Yes Ben is a star, he's 24 and working at Google now, but if your that much of a fan you should know that already.

remember, good karma!
Posted by: Ian Hayward on June 13, 2005 06:27 AMHappy Birthday. 2 years maybe 3 years away from me.
Posted by: Jmack on June 13, 2005 11:39 AM@Ian:
Harsh maybe, but I think 'Bob example' is expressing what a lot of us feel.
Sure Blake has done some cool stuff working on Mozilla/Firefox/etc.
But what gets to some of us is that for the last year (or more) his contributions are extreeeeemely low, yet he get's all the praise from the media.
Ben, Roc, Tor, Doron, bz, and dozens of others have made much more, and important contributions to Firefox in the last two years than blake, yet no exposure for them.
I'm not dissing Blake, on the contrary, I hope he does great with his new Startup, but the fact of the matter is School + Startup has taken his time away, yet he's still being praised as if he was hacking on firefox 24/7 like the others are (yes, an exageration)
Jed,
I don't see any media praising me for hacking Firefox 24 hours a day. As far as I can tell, the media is excited that a lightweight browser with an obsessive focus on simplicity emerged to finally fight fire with fire against the dominant consumer browser. As far as I can tell, nobody else was going to start work on that browser if I Dave and I didn't. Unless someone is prepared to demonstrate that Mozilla wouldn't still be chugging along at the pace it had been if it weren't in part for my efforts, I'm going to stop apologizing now for becoming one of the public faces of Firefox.
And I really don't think capping the post with "I'm not dissing Blake" makes up for a post belittling my work. I think perhaps a more appropriate comment would have been "Happy birthday," since, after all, that was the point of Asa's post.

Woah, you either completely missed what I was trying to say, or I didn't say it very well.
For the benifit of the doubt I will say it was the later.
I appologize, in my post addressing Ian, I was mearly stating 'my personal opinion' that those who are currently working on Firefox are being forgotten in the media's eye. I no way did I mean to 'bilittle' any of your efforts, if that is what you got out of my comment, I appologize once again.
What I guess I was hoping to say is, now that you are away at school and doing your start-up thing, the media could start focusing on the hundreds of others that are helping shape Firefox, which still includes you.
As for your birthday, I sent you a happy birthday to blake@firefox.com earlier, I guess I didn't think Asa's blog was the place to wish you a great one, and awesome luck with your startup.
You actually are inspiring me to plan on starting a small one in the next few years.
Posted by: Jed on June 13, 2005 09:35 PMOh, forgot, as to the 24/7 part, I was refering to the articles that were claiming you were the 'lead Firefox architect' with no mention of Dave's work with you nor Ben's current work. Again, I don't think I'm belittling, just pointing out some nits that bug me.
Please don't misunderstand me, we would not be here if it wasn't for you, dave and Joe, thank you, and incase you didn't read my e-mail, Happy birthday! One more year until your 21, enjoy it!
Posted by: Jed on June 13, 2005 09:41 PMJed,
I didn't get your birthday e-mail since my server has been turning them away (see my latest blog post). Sorry if I misread the intent of your post.
