yahoo! comes through

A while back Yahoo! promised to continue to improve support for Firefox and they've just made another major leap forward with Firefox support for Yahoo! Avatars.

I take great pride in the work we've done to create and distribute a browser that web developers and web companies want to support. Thanks to everyone over at Yahoo! for helping to build a cross-browser web.

Good. Maybe they'll eventually add support for Firefox at launch.yahoo.com.

Finally, even after they said they said they would make a firefox toolbar but took them months for them to come through with.

The ability to edit Yahoo mail filters in FireFox will hopefully come soon as well.

Yes, but doesn't support any other OS than windows. Yay for the "good-enough to shut them up" fix!

On Launch and Firefox...

Yeah, we know.

We know.

WE KNOW.

It's the single biggest Firefox complaint internally too. Seriously.

I just tried creating an Avatar and it didn't work, either in Deer Park or Firefox 1.0.4 (both on Win2K). The little 'preview your avatar' window never updated no matter what I clicked on.

Does this thing actually _work_ with Firefox, or did they just take off the JavaScript that blocks FF at the door? ;-)

No Firefox support for me on http://avatars.yahoo.com.

On my Mac Mini / 10.3.9 / FF 1.0.4:

We're sorry, Yahoo! Avatars doesn't currently support your operating system and/or browser.

To use Yahoo! Avatars, you need:

* Microsoft Windows operating system
* One of these browsers:
o Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher,
o Netscape Navigator 7.2,
o Mozilla Suite 1.7.6,
o Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3 or higher
* Macromedia Flash Player 7.0.19 or higher

We may support other platforms in the future. Please check back.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see the difficulty in creating an avatar system that works on any browser on any platform.

What part of this system is Windows specific? Presumambly it's drawing on something that Windows has and Mac OS hasn't?!

Honestly, I'm really not seeing how these services can't 'just work' on any platform/browser combo. The same goes for Launch. It's a music video service, right? I can view any site that displays mpeg/wmv/mov/avi files in Firefox, so what's the difference with Launch?

I'm obviously missing something here.

I'm sitting in my hotel and I was able to change my avatr vithin FF no problem.

Yeah, they better change launch to be more compatable with all browser. :D

By the way their toolbar is clearly spyware.

Jason Lefkowitz: I had the same problem with the preview window not working. Then I turned off Adblock and it worked fine. Disable Adblock (if you have it) or any other page modifying extensions (Greasemonkey, RemoveItPermanently, Platypus, etc) and then try it again.

:D you can use my greasemonkey script (pkLaunch) for Yahoo! Launch.

Thanks John, that did the trick. Fun with extensions! :)

I am running adblock, and I did not have to dusable anything. It still works on my end. Of course it's not a big deal since I use Trillian 99% of the the time.
