There is a very interesting article over at Google Blogscoped which talks about the Google Translator and what it might mean in the years to come.
We live in interesting times.
Posted by asa at May 22, 2005 02:45 PMHow much Google pays Mozilla for all the advertisements?
Posted by: Poop on May 22, 2005 04:02 PMThat is bloody amazing.
Posted by: Jofers on May 22, 2005 05:17 PMHoly crow. Is google positioning itself to take over the net? Becuase considering the technology I'm reading about on that site, they are in a really good position to do so, with style!
Posted by: Sean Jodrey on May 22, 2005 05:30 PMNow THAT is impressive...
This could be a ground-breaking technology. It might change the way we surf the internet forever.
Posted by: GamingFox on May 22, 2005 06:59 PMGoogle doesn't need to release their own browser - just release an extension for Fx. ;)
Posted by: Rish on May 22, 2005 07:39 PMI'll believe it when I see it. There's too much speculation. Admittedly, Google has worked wonders with its innovative Gmail, news, and now personalized homepages (and who can forget their search algorithm), but when they suggest that they can unite the world through an Internet translation service, I'm a bit skeptical.
Posted by: MarbleheadMan on May 22, 2005 07:44 PMNonsense, if they're going to set it up making comparison of two books in different languages, they won't have success. Everyone knows, there's no any identical verbal construction, every translator translates on his own and uses some digressions.
Posted by: Midnight on May 22, 2005 09:50 PMIts not just two books in every languages...
From the link: Google used the United Nations Documents to train their machine, and all in fed 200 billion words.
200 BILLION words... Thats a lot of training, and I think UN documents are perfect for it because UN documents are the most official documents in mulitple languages in the world. You can't ask for better training than this. True, there will be digressions, but you can reduce it with a LOT and LOT of training and use official documents more often. It won't be perfect, but it is better than nothing.
Posted by: GamingFox on May 22, 2005 10:17 PMI am really waiting to see the GIM concept in action. In the mean time, being french, I can't find words to describe how suckish is the current algorythm Google is using for French to English ( and vice-versa) stuff. So UN or not, there is still much room for improvement !

Posted by: Poop on May 23, 2005 04:30 AMI hate bruteforce AI ... it takes all the fun out of it.
Although one might argue that it is the same way as we,humans, learn.
