ask jesse - about security

Jesse Ruderman, one of Mozilla's very talented contributors, spends a few paragraphs over at his blog to talk about how he finds security holes.

Jesse's been contributing to Mozilla for years as a volunteer and an intern. He has proved his value all over the project but is probably best known for finding security vulnerabilities, maintaining the burning edge and pornzilla, as well as for his awesome collection of extremely useful bookmarklets.

Porn is not funny. It is seriously degrading to women. Shame on you for giving this publicity.

Posted by: X on May 5, 2005 01:01 PM

I agree with X. I'm concerned that mozilla would even allow somebody to play on their name in that manner.

Those who are the most critical of porn tend to have the weirdest sexual habits. It is no coincidence that priests ans morality preachers have the worst record in this regard.

Posted by: Barend on May 5, 2005 03:16 PM

It may be degrading to women, but they sure aren't forced! Also, what about the man? You sexist bastard...

Priests are by no means have the worst record in this regard, rather they just seem to be the most publicity.

And I agree, that project is pretty bad.

1) pornzilla is a set of extensions that improves the ability to browse picture galleries. pornzilla is just a more or less funny name for it.
2) i browse the burning edge every day, although mostly for new comments the last few weeks, because jesse doesnt seem to get around updating it as often as he used to. still a great site!

Pornzilla could also be called ImageZilla or something of the like, couldn't it? Exactly. It's not like it comes with Porn or something.

The project isn't bad, the name just gives the user an idea for it's usage.

Jesse rocks.

"I'm concerned that mozilla would even allow somebody to play on their name in that manner."

The Foundation doesn't have ownership of the -zilla suffix. If anything, that defaults to a certain giant Japanese lizard.

"It is seriously degrading to women."

No doubt it is degrading to some women. But all women? Not a chance. Similarly, a job at Walmart, at McDonalds, or as a custodian can also be degrading. Or not. I believe it depends on one thing: do the people around you treat you with respect.

To X and Benjamin:

You have a point, but as others have mentioned, you are being sexists. Who ever said Porn was directly related to women? If you think that, you are a sexist and have a biased opinion on what is degrading to women vs what is degrading to men, hence you are chauvinistic.

Shame on you.

Secondly, lighten up, take a joke and a play on words for what they are worth, if you are really concerned with this, take it to Jesse personally, as the rest of us actually enjoy a sense of humor every now and then. (and no, I do not condone Pornography)

You have it backwards Jed. Those who exploit women, or take advantage of women exploiting themselves, are sexist.

What about womens rights? Don't women have the right to exploit themselves? After age 18, of course.

This isn't me arguing for or aganist porn, I'm just saying that if a woman likes other guys seeing her do her thing and happens to make pornography because of this, what is for you to say about it? Pornography is legal in the United States of America, and it is legal for women to sign up to work in pornographic films. If the woman was forced into it, however, I must say I disapprove. It's all about rights.

Porn is only degrading to women if they are prudes or allow themselves to be degraded. There are thousands of women who make incredible amounts of money in porn. There are thousands more who put themselves through college by stripping. There are thousands of Feminists who find porn to be empowering, as it gives the woman complete control over her sexuality and how she portrays it. It makes the woman the controller of the relationship, and the men subservient. It's not like women are abducted by the truckload and sent off the porn-sweatshops against their will.

As for deviant sex, deviancy is in the eye of the beholder. I find people who attempt to ignore the fact that we are beings for whom sexual reproduction is a large part of our existence. Men find women attractive, women find men attractive (generally). Denying that is deviant. Forcing your morality on others is deviant. Declaring what is and is not degrading to all women, without even BEING a woman is deviant.

Ok, I am arguing for porn.

There is porn and then there is rape. If a woman subjects herself to being paid for sexual acts or the appearance of sexual acts..that's her buisness and the person paying...(and in certain states weather or not she's clean). No one (including Jesse) says "hey your a woman which means you get to buisness...". No and that is why women are successful too.

*putting foot in mouth*
Look at Mitchell Baker (MoFo Founder) she is very successful and respected amongst all of us, however no one said your a female you can't do that. No.
*taking foot outa mouth*

Also God put us on this earth without clothes....were the ones who messed that up.

Further, the porn industry in the US takes in more per year than the film and music industries combined. Jenna Jameson is mroe popular than Britney Spears. That means one of two things, there are a few _really_ perverted _really_ rich people, or a vast number of Americans are dabbling with adult entertainment. Perverse and bizarre are very relative terms.

Dear God, I hope none of you hear about libpr0n. Oh, wait...

Posted by: Darren Winsper on May 6, 2005 03:07 AM

With the rendering pipeline moving to Cairo, will libpr0n be removed? The end of another legend? ;-)
