spreadfirefox's for the record project

Over at SpreadFirefox.com, we're relaunching the "For the Record" project. This is your opportunity to get directly involved with Firefox's rapid response team and to hold the media responsible for what they publish.

Just yesterday, in the flurry of Opera release stories, at least three different journalists published articles claiming that Opera had bested Firefox's download rate during the first few days after release. They used Firefox PR download numbers and compared those with Opera 8's first days to claim that Opera was making a bigger splash than Firefox. Had they compared apples to apples, and used our actual 1.0 release numbers, it would have been obvious that Firefox's 2.5 million in the first two days actually dwarfed Opera's 600 thousand in the first two days.

The Spread Firefox community jumped right on these inaccuracies and some of the offending articles were corrected (though the headlines remain in a Google News query for those that are interested.)

The media likes a good headline and often times they're under very tight schedules so accuracy as a concern quickly falls to the side. The For the Record team at SpreadFirefox.com is where we help them out by pointing out their errors and also letting them know we appreciate it when they get it right.

If you've been looking for a way to get plugged in to helping spread Firefox, give the For the Record project a look.

whatever happened to the for the record mailing list? it's been dead since spreadfirefox.com launched. which is a sad thing as it did seem to run rather well.
