Is this a count of downloads from unique IP addresses? Because I've downloaded releases 1.0.1, 1.0.2, etc...
Posted by: Chris on April 17, 2005 04:18 PMOh, and regardless, that's an awesome number. Congratulations, guys. :-)
Posted by: Chris on April 17, 2005 04:20 PMI believe that is the number of downloads that didn't come from a firefox user agent. That is what asa said he was going to do way back when 1.0.1 was to be released. Don't quote me on this.
Posted by: Jay MacLean on April 17, 2005 05:11 PMI've downloaded Fx about 10 times, but I don't use it as my primary browser.
Posted by: huh? on April 18, 2005 06:12 AMIf anybody's interested, I managed to hack out a quick PHP script that returns just the plain text for the numbers... not particularly useful, but better than nothing. :)
Oh, and congratulations on getting this many... 50M is just a few short hops away! I've been using since .61, and it's just been getting better and better.
Posted by: jordan on April 18, 2005 07:33 AMAsa can claim 50mil or what the hell, 100mil. These numbers are just marketing gimmicks, unless substantiated.
Posted by: Facto on April 18, 2005 09:36 AMOf course the numbers are for marketing use. Why else would they be publicly displayed on Spread Firefox?
And, hey, huh? - nobody is claiming that Firefox has 46,000,000 users. It could have more, but more likely less.

I would put a lot of money on that it's a lot more,
Though one person may download a few copies, that's far outweighed by one person installing it on 1'000 college machines, or the number of times I've installed a copy on other machines whilst fixing computers, nor the numbers of copies given out on CDS, passed from friends to friends and so on.
46'000'000 != 5.8% Of the world Internet Population

That's true. But it could also be that the, say 50 million Firefox users, are the most active of web surfers, hence making up a disproportionately large amount of the page hits out there.
Posted by: David Naylor on April 18, 2005 01:29 PMActually, come to think of it, 46,000,000 could be pretty close to about 6% of the Internet population. 46,000,000/0,06=767,000,000
Isn't that fairly close to the total Internet population?
Posted by: David Naylor on April 18, 2005 01:34 PMHi,
the english Wikipedia is using a graph you made some time ago, showing the download counter in relation to time.
Perhaps you might consider updating it, as soon as the 50.000.000 mark has been hit. ;)

The download numbers of Opera 8 reached 600, 000 in the first 48 hours.

By the way, Firefox and Mozilla break through the 10 per cent mark in the browser distribution, while Opera occupies about 1 percent share of the market.
