We've spent several days with our top devs working on finiding a way to make necessary security improvements without breaking the world of 1.0.x extensions and we think we're finally there. This set of test builds should behave pretty much the same as Firefox 1.0.2 and if you can find any regressions over 1.0.2, including in extension handling, please let me know ASAP.
Firefox 1.0.3 candidate builds:
I thank you all for all the amazing feedback during this last week of candidate builds. I'm overwhelmed by the volume and quality of replies and want to thank everyone that's helped with extension testing. If everything works as we expect it to, extensions should all work with this release. Do let me know, either here in comments, or in an email if you'd prefer, if you find any regressions over 1.0.2. Thanks, again, for all your help.
Posted by asa at April 8, 2005 09:26 PMAck, I commented in the last blog entry about this version. :P But I'll say that though I've only been using it a few minutes, I've had no problems. Java and Flash are working fine with Adblock enabled, though I updated Java a few minutes ago, so that could possibly be part of it. I do get this error in the JavaScript console, however:
Error: this.mTabBrowser.mProgressListeners has no properties

Posted by: Peng on April 8, 2005 10:16 PM....Trying this new version in a blank profile, I don't get that error in the JavaScript console. I do still get that one when I view a page with a Java applet, though.

Posted by: Peng on April 8, 2005 10:19 PMi downloaded 1.0.3 and now if i right-click on a URL ... Firefox shuts down. Is this a known bug in the system? or is it mine thats causing this issue?
Posted by: James on April 8, 2005 10:22 PMYou should have a look at Bug 289513 and Bug 289667. Both of them are regressions from the patch applied for Bug 285438 (which I think is in branch1.0.3).

Posted by: David Naylor on April 9, 2005 12:08 AMI did clean install with a new profile and ff crashed four times in an hour, don't know why, three times I was searching from Google and one time reading some forum posts.
I didn't notice these problems with earlier candidates...
Haven't noticed other problems so far

Posted by: Jay MacLean on April 9, 2005 12:31 AMUninstalled previous 1.0.3RC before installing this one. Using old profile I get lots of crashes (more than whole year so far) when browsing multiple tabs open. Usually crashes when opening a new tab from a link and other tabs are still loading.
Couldn't reproduce with new profile (default theme, no extensions).
All previous 1.0.3RC's have worked ok for me.

Posted by: JS on April 9, 2005 12:32 AMI used the 1.0.3 on my profile, it said old extensions would be disabled but it's not the case: Adblock and Flashgot are enabled but don't work.
The text size of tabs was too big with Opera 7.5x theme, but it did not happen everytime.
I disabled then enabled these extensions, restarted Firefox and they work.

Posted by: alfons on April 9, 2005 01:08 AMAfter running this RC for two or three hours i see it's taking up rather alot of memory: ff103-180mb.png
I don't know if this is anything other than the old ordinary memory leaks or if this is something special for this RC...

Posted by: David Naylor on April 9, 2005 01:12 AMAsa, it still crashes doing the test on http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/mangle.php
I think Linkification extension is causing crashes for me. (Uninstalled it and can't crash ff anymore :) )
Posted by: JS on April 9, 2005 02:21 AMI've been running for around four hours and Firefox is now using a W-H-O-P-P-I-N-G 326 MB. Hmmm... I could have sworn this never happened to me before...
Posted by: David Naylor on April 9, 2005 02:36 AMI am an end user of Firefox, who happens to like something new. This build (RC6, 20050408) works fine for me. However, I have one problem, although this has happend to me for some time (so it is obvious that it is not caused by this build): I have two entries of Firefox(es?) --- English is not my native language--- in an open-with menu. (Pointing a html file ---> right click ---> open with ---> two Firefox entries).
I have istalled several versions of Firefox(es?) so far, including that of nightlies. But now I have only one version of it (1.0.3 RC6). I would like you to fix this problem, not now, but in the near future :-)
My system is Windows XP Professional, SP2 (US-English version).
Posted by: end user on April 9, 2005 02:44 AMI have now tried using Firefox 1.0.3 RC XVII ;-) with a clean profile, and I (seem to) get the same memory leaks as with my default profile.
Posted by: David Naylor on April 9, 2005 03:04 AMPhil Randal: That (bcheck.scanit.be) is one fine tool!
Posted by: alfons on April 9, 2005 03:51 AMGood job...
Adblock works again without bugging flash files & alternative quicktime
Posted by: Da Dude on April 9, 2005 06:21 AMDavid: FF will use will all the memory available to cache webpages. High memory usage doesn't mean there's a memory leak.
If you don't want FF to use memory this way, then set the maximum amount of memory FF is allowed to use as cache:
about:config -> set "browser.cache.memory.capacity" to any value (specified in kB). Set it to "-1" to restore default behaviour.
Posted by: Ced on April 9, 2005 11:26 AMAdblock is working normally again........everything else seems to be working that was wacked out in the previous release candidates also.
Posted by: jegar on April 9, 2005 11:34 AMBesides previous errors I got from Scrapbook extension in Javascript console, I see one more:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIObserverService.removeObserver]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://global/content/bindings/browser.xml :: destroy :: line 569" data: no]
I cannot use my old profile, again.
Posted by: Ivan Icin on April 9, 2005 11:36 AMCed, that doesn't work. Never has.
The problem with Firefox's memory usage is that doesn't give it back. Run Firefox for long enough and eventually the system will start paging to disk for everything.
It's been mentioned that this has been fixed for 1.1 - I hope it has!

Dan100: I don't garantee that tip works as i've never had to use it, but I've never suffered from memory leaks either. I, too, run FF for days without closing it, browsing hundreds on pages on multiple tabs, and still, FF consumes a decent amount of memory and definitely does not waste any.
On my system, FF uses 20 to 25% of RAM, which is equal to 40/50MB. The rest is used by other applications and the system itself. There's barely no swap usages either.
Posted by: Ced on April 9, 2005 02:51 PMHaven't really done much useful testing for extensions - I'm playing with these candidate on my work machine where I don't want to go too nuts with my profile. This build is working fine for me (on win2k) with the couple of extensions that I do have (UA switcher, liveheaders, chatzilla), but then the previous candidates worked ok for me too...

FF 1.0.3 should stablise a little first, we're in no rush, lets get it right before releasing.
Posted by: mdew on April 9, 2005 03:33 PMmdew: This version of 1.0.3 is working fine for me. It shouldn't hurt you to try it, though I always back up my profile before trying a new version, "just in case". Really, these aren't a radical rewrite; there are some shanges, but they aren't huge. (right?)
Also, it doesn't use any more memory for me than 1.0.2.
Posted by: Peng on April 9, 2005 04:53 PMPeng: I use trunk at home, I don't mind unstability in that case, however at work, I do require a near-perfect browser. Reading some posts here, people are still experiencing some extension compatibility problems, and the memory sapping bug (as posted by other users), has me concerned.

Posted by: Jay MacLean on April 9, 2005 08:38 PMMaybe same reason here as JS above, linkification was the reason for crashes.
Now it has been stable for over 12 hours.
mdew: Well, you could just try 1.0.3 (maybe back up your profile first to be safe), and see how it works with your extensions and if it uses more memory than usual. That's the only real way to find out how it will work for you. :)
Or, of course, you could wait for the final release of 1.0.3 to come out. I expect there will be one or two more release candidates before teh final version, and they should fix some of the problems with it.
But I figure you should just try the current 1.0.3 and see how it works for you. If there are problems, just go back to 1.0.2.
Posted by: Peng on April 10, 2005 12:17 AMOh, I just found an odd bug: If you right-click on a link and select Properties, instead of just showing the little information about the link, it shows, well, a lot more stuff. It does not happen to me on the 20050406 or 20050404 1.0.3 builds.

After update to 1.0.3-Beta I can't log IN any more in my Bank Account. My bank account site is www.bancodobrasil.com.br and it uses a flash based security program.
Also I frequently have problems with a pop up saying "Document not found" when I'm browsing the internet.
Another weird problem is that in an INVISION forum that I make part almost no-one can log in and post messages using any version of firefox: forum.clubedohardware.com.br
as an update to my last post, it does (as others have suggested) seem to be linkification 0.9.20 (haven't tested other versions) + this 1.0.3 candidate that causes crashes. been using this version for several hours with (only) that extension disabled and no more crashes. re-enable that extension, get crashes again immediately.
errors from other extensions in js console are also present in 1.0.2, so not reporting.
using Winxp sp2, Sun Java 5.0
so chalk me up as another confirmation of Linkification crash issue.
(for anyone with this problem that can't get the browser to stay up long enough to disable the extension, use 1.0.2)
Smiff is right, it helped for me (didn't have time to search what the cause was :) )
No crashes so far with linkification 0.9.20 disabled (enabled it does crash)

Posted by: Da Dude on April 10, 2005 04:28 PMFYI, the candidate build works fine with Greasemonkey, which is remarkable since I think GM probably does everything the wrong way twice.
The only problem was because some user script authors were referencing window._content from the content context and expecting it to resolve to window. This appears to have been removed in 1.0.3, but I can understand that they shouldn't have been doing that in the first place.
Posted by: Aaron on April 10, 2005 08:42 PMPrint or printpreview still does not work with this version of Firefox (especially the mozilla pages!).

Posted by: Peng on April 11, 2005 05:37 AM....Buuuut it breaks DictionarySearch. Maybe I should just go back to 1.0.2, or the version of 1.0.3 from the fourth that I had no problems with. x_x
Posted by: Peng on April 11, 2005 07:03 AMI downloaded and tried installing 20050410 build from
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-aviary1.0.1/
But when I make right-click, I find two or three lines of blank spaces for missing extensions, at least, one of which is that of DictionarySearch 0.7.
I deinstalled the newest build, and went back to 20050408, which is more stable for me.
My system is Windows XP, SP2.

Posted by: Peng on April 11, 2005 08:40 AMAll right, 20050409 works fine with DictionarySearch, but it only looks to be available for Linux.

SpellBound 0.7.3
Tab Mix 0.1.5
TrustBar 0.2
Reactions:
- Spellbound does not work on start up (works fine in FF 1.0.2). Complains that Spellbound dictionary perhaps needs to be re-installed. No apparent change after re-installing user dictonary. Then suddenly starts working, (but asks for dictionary).
- RSS Feed widget/tool (?) located at the bottom of the screen, next to the "Google Preview Options" button, takes a while to become visable/useful
- Occasionsally, scroll windows (for this text-entry box, as an example) do not show up when the entire window is less than a full window (with menu items visable).
- Occasionally, the top, thin line of a text-entry box (such as this one) disappears when srolling up or down. The remaining lines (bottom left side, right side next to scroll bar) do not change. Eventually, this line "re-draws" itself.
I think what I am saying is a general over all slowness for the extension and some of the screen re-draw functions? Again, I am just a user :)
So far that's it. I hope this information assists you. I must say that you folks are doing a heck of a job with this browser. Thank you so much for your efforts.

Although no problem for me (already had one in my start => programs)
Posted by: Da Dude on April 11, 2005 02:10 PMThe current 1.0.3 still appears to be having problems processing some javsscripts. On westlaw.com (subscription only, so you can't access it w/o an account), for example, certain windows invoked by javascript commands open, but don't fully populate. (If that's the right word: The window appears, but the content that's supposed to be inside never does.) Uninstalling 1.0.3 and reinstalling 1.0.2 consistently fixes the problem. I probably can provide more info re the javascript commands at issue, etc. if someone tells me what to look for and where to look (being able to spell the word "javascript" pretty much exhausts my knowledge of javacripts or how Firefox processes them).
