Over the last week I've seen about a dozen reports of people who recently started experiencing extreme slowdowns in Firefox. With a little investigation, it seems that the culprit is the Switch Proxy extension. If you're experiencing a recent and serious slowdown in Firefox and you've got the Switch Proxy extension installed, I'd recommend disabling it and seeing if that helps things.
Posted by asa at February 23, 2005 10:30 PMDoes it regards of recent nightlies or is it caused by an updated version of SP? I do use SP on FF1.0 and don't see any slowdown.

Posted by: Molgar on February 24, 2005 01:05 AMSo is this considered 'normal' behavior - when an extension is trying to reach a website that is dead, it freezes Mozilla - or could this considered to be a bug?
Posted by: Martijn on February 24, 2005 01:14 AMyes, it's a bug but a bug in the extension.
An extension can do everything : crash Mozilla/Firefox, freeze it, corrupt it, damage the OS, delete files on your HDD.....
Have you checked that this was not caused by https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=280603 ?

Posted by: web on February 25, 2005 03:41 PMI installed 1.0.1 and now it I start with a blank browser and none of the menu items work. It just sits there. I can't remember if I have the SwitchProxy extension, but if so, is there a way I can disable it outside of Firefox since I can't get to it through the browswer itself.
I have tried uninstall/installing 1.0.1 again and again, always with the same result.
Posted by: jornada on February 27, 2005 07:52 AMi am having the exact same problem as jornada, and have been unable to get any answers from the mozillazine..other than to disble the switch proxy extension.if i can't find it i sure can't disable it. there is no goto in win ME, so the closest i have come is to disable the check for updates feature in frefox page options. i am certain this is not the answer. IE is working just fine, BUT i don't want to use it.
i have uninstalled, reinstalled, lost all my bookmarks, and am still stuck with a version of firefox that isn't working. can someone help???

Posted by: MalcQV on March 1, 2005 01:52 AMIdentical problem. Just staring at a white screen and menu items do not work. Strange enough, view source (CRTL-U) does work !
Even weirder - I do not have the switchproxy extension... help ?
Posted by: MikeOne on March 1, 2005 02:06 AMSame thing for me. Can we get at this piece of crap extension through the registry?
Posted by: Eric on March 1, 2005 04:46 AMIf you still want to use SwitchProxy change the following line in your prefs.js file:
user_pref("switchproxy.update.notify", false);
This prevents SwitchProxy from checking for updates.
Posted by: Basthet on March 1, 2005 07:09 AMsame problem as Charlie a white screen that appears ok but will not go to any sites. Firefox worked fine when first downloaded but just stays in the above state when pc restarted , next day. Have tried removing and re installing without success.

Posted by: John on March 1, 2005 05:09 PMI'm having the same problem as the John and Ian and it's very frustrating. Any advice would be appreciated.
Posted by: Dan on March 2, 2005 09:28 AMI am having the same problem as others. I don't have switchProxy extension istalled (at least I don't see it on my list of extensions).
It seems that one of the extenions may be the culprit for the slow down. Becuase, at first before any extention or themes were installed, the FF was blazing speed. and now it is crawling. In fact every time I type in a word, the kb freezes, and I have to wait until it comes back to life, to allow continued typing.
Unfortunately I am not sure how to get into the prefs.js file to be able to edit and disable the "switch proxy" file.
My Firefox stalled for several minutes... What really helped was this line in the prefs.js file:
user_pref("switchproxy.update.notify", false);
Thanks!!
Posted by: Koni on March 2, 2005 11:39 PMRef above comments, after checking profile folder and deleting suggested files etc. firefox still would not work. Eventually found to be being blocked by firewall, filters set up and firefox now working fine.
Posted by: Ian on March 3, 2005 05:19 AMWell 1.0.1 still doesn't work for me.
I added the "swithproxy" line in the prefs.js file. But I had to do in notepad. It looks like a java file and it wouldn't open by double-clicking on it.
Posted by: Scott on March 4, 2005 12:58 AMI was having the same problem with Firefox 1.0.1 until I disabled the check for updates on the Switch Proxy Tool (1.3.1).
Posted by: Mike on March 4, 2005 12:26 PMARGH!!! Scott, I am just where you are, I have absolutely no idea of what to do. I am lost and need help.... ungently!! I do NOT have the Switch Proxy extension and I am not very good at editing files and stuff. Some one.... please..... HELP!!!!
Posted by: Dan on March 4, 2005 07:08 PMMy Firefox will not even open now. Had the same problem of a blank browser with no tab functions available. IE works fine, so I'm wondering if Firefox just got torpedoed.
Posted by: Mark on March 5, 2005 01:35 AMI've been experiencing slow downs and stalls as well. Try clearing the cache and cookies.. not through firefox but through explorer. (c>windows>application date>mozilla>firefox>profiles. Cookies are in the main profile directory. I've got mine set to clear in shutdown, but for some reason it's not doing it.
Posted by: Mel on March 5, 2005 04:13 AMI tried uninstalling Forefox and reinstallng it 2 times and it still didn't work. I am going crazy right now :( .We need help fast! I do not have that sswitch profy extension so there's nothing i can do about that one...
Posted by: Dan on March 5, 2005 06:04 AMHmmm, I have 1.0 and will be updating to 1.0.1 in a moment. However, I do experience the same problem in 1.0 and do not have the "switchproxy.update.notify" listed in my "about:config" listing. Confused.
Posted by: Max on March 5, 2005 04:25 PMdo not know what the switch proxy extension is or where to find it or how to uninstall, not a computer expert so explaination in plain American English please. Thanks
Posted by: Fred on March 6, 2005 03:32 PMi am using windows 2000 prof 433Mhz 64mb computer. And i'm experiencing a slowdown when I start it or when I change and save options/preferences. I currently have only one extension installed (scrapbook) and it takes about 7 minutes to start a browser. without extensions about 2 mins which is still long, cuz when i used version0.9 i had chatzilla, adblock, sage , web developer and many more installed (NO SWITCHPROXY) but I didn't experience any slowdown whatsoever. it was only in 1.0 and 1.0.1 that I experienced it...thinking of going back to opera again....hehehehe...or maybe i'll just use a textbased browser instead.
what could be the problem? my guess is on the preferences(don't know where exactly)...
i don't know if this is related but i takes a long time to open a 13kb javascript file(firefox preferences) in textpad or notepad...i have other scripts which are larger than that and it opens just fine....
and also the extension manager does not unistall some extensions correctly. I had to manually remove them
I am with Fred who posted above. People directed me to this link for an answer for my firefox browser which is now just timming out, but I have no idea what everyone is talking about here or how to fix it. If someone would be so kind to please post step by step directions I would appreciate it.
Posted by: Kimberly Moreland on March 9, 2005 01:38 PMSame problem I think!!! Strange thing is I have full access when, as administrator, I downloaded 1.0.1 update but I cannot get a conection to thunderbird. When I signin as bsim I have thunderbird coming in but it will not send. Firefox just sits and runs, and runs, and runs, as do programmes such as AVG, Adawear etc. As with Kimberly need step by step help.
Posted by: bsim52 on March 9, 2005 07:41 PMWith the new update as of 03/09/05, my firefox does not work. I click on it and it hangs, never getting to any site, it just appears to be loading but the blue bar at the bottom right sits at about 15%. I uninstalled and reinstalled, I also tried installing the mozilla suite. Still the same problem.
I do not know what switchproxy is. I use Windows XP home, I have a laptop with a comcast cable connection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..... I just can't live without my firefox!!
Where are all you geeks when us phylistines need you? I hate to think I have to go back to explorer. Surely someone out there can give us some BASIC "how tos" on this problem PLEASE!
Posted by: bsim52 on March 10, 2005 07:37 PMMy Firefox was freezing for a good 10 minutes at the start page so I was pretty much experiencing what most of you other users were. Once it did low, All I did was 2 things.
1) I typed in about:config in the navagation bar on top, & proceeded.
2) Scrolled down to "update_notifications.enabled" & set it to false.
3) I then deciced to change the homepage to something different, so just used http://www.google.com
After I did that, I close firefox, restarted & it ran fine.
