It's about that time again :-)
What do you want to know? I'm fairly knowledgeable about many things Mozilla but the questions don't have to be limited to just that. I've also got a keen interest in astronomy, planetary exploration, and cosmology. Oh, and I have a cat and consider myself fairly educated on the subject of cat parenting.
In addition to taking your questions, I'm interested in who else you'd like to hear from. I've got a plan to try to do a "mozilla person" interview about once a month and post it here to my blog so I'm interested in who you're interested in.
Oh, and I'm gonna be away for a few days celebrating my wife's birthday and one of our anniversaries up in the un-wired mountains so don't expect to hear a lot from me until Monday.

Do you count Pluto as a planet? Do you think it should be declassified as such? What about other objects of similar size? Should they be promoted to planet?
I'd personally have a hard time accepting that it's not. I'm still in shock from "finding" Planet X and then the admission it's not real. Heck, the fact that we found planets outside of our little solar system during my lifetime is amazing to me.
Posted by: Jason F on February 17, 2005 09:44 AMAs for interviewing someone else I'd love to hear from Scott about him as a person and his involvment in TB. Don't have any questions in particular at this moment but he is the one I'd love to know about.

Congratulations with your wife's birthday.

Posted by: aasgier on February 17, 2005 10:09 AMIn my line of work, I help to find defects on integrated circuits. In recent years there has been a significant effort to build tools that comb through test data to identify common issues that should be investigated by a human.
I assume that given a bug, you can search for related Talkback data. But instead of starting from the bug, can you start from the TalkBack data? Can the data store tell you the top five reasons for crashes? Can the data store initiate its own bugzilla entries?

Posted by: Nils on February 17, 2005 10:17 AMHi Asa,
I'd be curious to hear about your perspective on Firefox/Thunderbird vs. SeaMonkey. Aside from the (admittedly strong) nostalgia value, what business value do you think SeaMonkey has post-Firefox 1.0, and do you think that there should be more of a drive from the Mozilla Foundation on projects such as Sunbird?
In addition, I'd be interested to hear how many employees of the Mozilla Foundation are active stakeholders in major decisions, such as renaming Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox. Do such issues involve a round-table discussion, or is a case of Ben taking a lead and then seeking feedback?
Posted by: Stephen Smith on February 17, 2005 12:04 PMXRE/GRE were planned to happen at some point. Is enough known about the details of these components/libraries/runtimes to have them in a schedule somewhere? I admit I am confused about their relationship to shipping projects (like does FF use GRE, but statically links it?). Enough of my confused babble...

Posted by: Alex Bishop on February 17, 2005 12:21 PMHow much of the marketshare do you think firefox will have by the end of this year?
Posted by: Joël Kuiper on February 17, 2005 12:36 PMOK, I'll give this one a try.
My cat Tiger (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/djst/photos/2003-06-22/tiger.jpg) often digs frenetically in the sandbox both before and after he's doing number one or two. Sometimes he can step out of the sandbox, run to the living room and "scream" (don't know the English word for it, "meaow!") for a while, and then get back to the sandbox and continue the digging. It's as if something's not right, it's not a normal "bury the poo" dig.
I'm wondering if he could be in physical pain or something, when taking a leak?
Posted by: David Tenser on February 17, 2005 12:41 PMMy question:
Have you read the Harry Potter books? If yes, what did you think of them?
Posted by: M1th on February 17, 2005 01:07 PMI'd also like to see an interview with bz. He's extremely knowledgeable and level-headed; it's a shame he doesn't blog more often. I'd most like to hear him talk about Gecko. We've been hearing that all these exciting changes are happening to Gecko, but I'd like to hear some specifics as to what they are, explained so that a non-developer could understand. It would be interesting to also hear bz talk about the strengths and weaknesses of Gecko, what can be done about those weaknesses, how well it compares to other rendering engines, what things he wishes were done differently when it was first designed (i.e. bad design decisions or architecture), what new changes are planned for its future, and what he'd like to see done.

Posted by: alfons on February 18, 2005 12:06 PMHi Asa,
Bored on a Friday night, I decided to look into some Firefox UNCO's to see if I could help, and found the list is huge :(
So I downloaded a nightly (and had to mess around with Fedora to actually let me launch it...) and started going through them. My /question/ is this: Has gerv's proposal on automatically closing old UNCO's been implemented?
If not, are there still plans to do it?
Do you believe in astrology?
Posted by: Max on February 18, 2005 07:22 PMSo when will the slashdot rendering bug be fixed? :D
Posted by: Mikhail Capone on February 19, 2005 11:13 AMI've got a quick simple question. Will Firefox support the .jpf (Jpeg2000) format?
Posted by: nick on February 19, 2005 03:54 PMThere is a bug in bugzilla on jpeg2000, bug 36351.
Posted by: Smokey Ardisson on February 19, 2005 08:38 PMAs expected, marketing question: Will www.getfirefox.com ever get new content? This one is... well I can't see anyone said anything good about geek orientaiton of that.
I don't think that this is primary, as I believe most people come to this site with some probability to download, so influence of the page is limited. However, on millions of people coming to that page a week, it should not be underestimated, either. But anyway, it is even more important for image of Firefox than for download numbers.
Posted by: Ivan Icin on February 20, 2005 06:24 AMthe new 202 fwy that is headed south will it have an exit on Main/Apache Tr.???
Posted by: chuck v. on February 20, 2005 09:18 AMIn answer to "So when will the slashdot rendering bug be fixed? :D"
When the following movements have been met:
a) Slashdot updates their website design to beyond 1996.
b) When slashdot validates in W3C despite containing no user formatting to stop them from doing so.
c) When slashdot finally discovers (and posts multiple dupe articles about) how much everybody hates it
d) When hell has frozen over and Bill Gates switches to a Mac.
e) When slashotdot stops marking common-sense answers as "5: Insightful"
They've got a long way to go that's for sure but I think their aim is to complete step d) first before any of the others :P

Anyways, Asa - Will Mozilla publish any offical documentation on their site to help end users with protecting themselves against internet nasties?
What is Mozilla's stance on advocates blocking IE users from their site, will there be any offical repsonse on this that web designers can refer to?
Posted by: Kroc Camen on February 20, 2005 09:34 AMI am aware of bug 255942 and PyXPCOM.
I'd really like to use Python as a scripting language for Mozilla, everywhere Javascript can be used. When this will be possible?
Mozilla 2.0? In the far future? Never?
Hi
Why doesn't Firefox have better tabbed browsing?
The time when tabbed browsing was 'new' in itself has gone, you must now work on making tabbed browsing as powerful as possible.
You might say 'extensions' - I say this should be core functionality. None of these suggestions HINDERS existing 'casual' users, but appeals to the slightly more sophisticated user, who still won't bother with extensions. If you are clever it can all run together seamlessly with minimal UI bloat/interruption.
Posted by: Example on February 20, 2005 04:01 PMI have done some more searches and I have found three new links about Mozilla 2.0 and Python:
You guys have been so busy with your press releases and your scaling and blue skies thinking and worrying so much about those poor souls who absolutely MUST mix IDN classes in subdomain names that you've forgotten to hack on key security issues, popups we are seeing TODAY.
Why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh why oh why do IE and Opera now have better popup blocking than Firefox?
I switched to FF when 1.0 went public, and was very impressed. I haven't gotten anything since then, and the release schedule seems to be slipping away.
Also, I think your update mechanism doesn't nag enough. If there are security issues then you should do all you can to force upgrades.
Posted by: POPUP HATER on February 20, 2005 06:34 PMI second Alex Bishop's question for a list of Foundation employees.
and can we get a current list of mozilla staff? :-)
Posted by: Wolf on February 21, 2005 03:41 AMAre there any plans to update www.spreadfirefox.com, specifically in regards to some of the recent grumblings? For example the only project on the right hand side is "Help us build our firewall", other large projects such as Firefox materials and the BOINC projects are seemingly not being recognised.
Posted by: Pipe on February 21, 2005 06:16 AMAsa,

Posted by: Joe on February 21, 2005 07:23 AMHow much of a relationship does Mozilla have with Opera and Safari? I know there are projects (e.g. WHATWG) we all support/collaborate on, and there are developers that have worked on both Mozilla and one of the others, but is the relationship only "when there's a reason for it" or is it constant?
Posted by: dolphinling on February 21, 2005 07:44 AMWhy are you guys all doing PR and interviews, but not coding? There are no more killer features on the horizon as far as I can see, even though Opera has far more functionality right now.
Mozilla development seems to have gone stale. Has the power and fame gone to your head? Or does Mozilla just not scale nicely?
Posted by: puerto on February 21, 2005 01:24 PMWill 1.5 be Firefox's next highly publicized release? Or will 1.1, 1.2, etc. be given equal treatment? Or will these such things be considered on a "when-the-time-comes" basis?

Posted by: Cosmo on February 21, 2005 06:03 PMHello Asa ...
Do you think if it is planned that the "Live Bookmark" icon of Firefox will get a new menu with "Add this RSS to Thunderbird" ?
Or, at least a "copy RSS adress into clipboard"
I'm reading RSS with thunderbird, and often i have to read the source to find the link (link that Firefox has already discovered because the live bookmark icon is present :-)

Posted by: Ivan Icin on February 23, 2005 03:37 PMHow much support would the Mozilla Foundation give an effort to make SeaMonkey a long-living product line? Would you guys provide e.g. a community site (in parallel to sfx)? To what extent would you support marketing efforts? (I know that all would need a developer group leading and caring for SeaMonkey, like mconnor recently blogged.)
Posted by: Robert Kaiser on February 25, 2005 08:32 AMQ: How do I download all email attachments, in one unmonitored session to my hard drive with T-Bird?

Posted by: Chris on February 25, 2005 04:46 PMplease correct first the errors in mozilla (editor) bevore adding new useful or useless gimmicks.
some examples:
the mozilla-Editor
* kills php-Tags
* adds useless and too much linefeeds
* doesn't write \n in the header lines --->>> the is always near the -->> ... all in ONE line.
* links are very often changed to absolut even when you have sayed "relativ" like "D:/Eigene Dateien/Sub/Sub.../index.html" or "http://127.0.0.1/file.html" and so on when the link is only "index.html".
* mozilla adds useless empty tags in tables (td-fields) like ""
this is really more important than adding new gimmicks noone really needs.
your software kills my < and > - Tags.
in my writing above it meens:
* doesn't write \n in the header lines --->>> <html><head> the is always near the -->> <html><head><title>... all in ONE line.
* mozilla adds useless empty tags in tables (td-fields) like "< >"
Asa -
What is the status of the stand alone XRE (XUL Runtime). It would be great to have a prebuilt XRE for all the platforms that mozilla supports to make building cross-platform stand alone XUL applications easier. I have used XULRunner for proto-typing and testing out XUL, but this approach is not a viable option for a real application.
Thanks for your time.
