I've come into possession of a copy of the February issue of Wired magazine that's autographed by Blake Ross, Ben Goodger, and Dave Hyatt - the lead engineers behind the application that would come to be known as Firefox.
At first I was thinking of putting it up on ebay but marcia suggested I see if anyone at my blog was interested in purchasing it first.
I would be happy to see it go to a Firefox fan here if the price is right ;-) At the same time, I have no idea how I'd handle the transaction here.
Would you all be interested if I set up some kind of bidding process here or should I just take it over to Ebay? Do you know if there are any movable type plugins for something like that?
(and there are several "easter egg" autographs inside the magazine from other key developers.)
update If the general consensus is that I shouldn't profit from this then I've got no problem keeping it. It'll be cool to pull out of the drawer in 20 years.
Posted by asa at February 9, 2005 03:49 PMOooh. Thats a bit of history right there. I'd be interested if the price was right :) You could use Paypal to do it?
Posted by: Peter Carr on February 9, 2005 04:39 PMAsa,
Why not have a lottery? I'm thinking that MoFo should just keep it, as something to eventually donate to the Smithsonian, eh?
However, it appears that from your blog, you'd like to use it to raise money. Set the amount you want to raise, then issue raffle tickets for donations.
It could be as popular at the NYT ad, no?
Just my $0.02.
Posted by: LarryB on February 9, 2005 06:32 PMI like your idea, Larry. Something like $2 a ticket, 5 for $9, and maybe a limit? or not? It would be great to have a ton of money rasied by lots of people than just one person paying a lump sum.
Anyways, I want it. Alot. It'd be just so cool to show people.. haha... maybe make it a traveling magazine, and a raffle a month to have a new owner! Haha... OK, I'm thinking too big! Haha.
Posted by: Joey on February 9, 2005 06:49 PMa nice story:
an important online-newspaper, derStandard.at, recently created a workaround for a gecko-bug, the back-button didn't work, a bugzilla-bug was filed in 2000 or so. they promoted firefox very well in the past, and as firefox gains more and more marketshare, their webdesign branch obviously also reacted on firefox. i know at least one person that will from now on be able to completely switch to firefox.
i hope that this is just the beginning, and much more people, companies and organizations will change their homepages to more standards-compliance...
Posted by: Sebastian on February 9, 2005 11:21 PMI'd also be interested. If put on ebay, please make sure you set it so only seriously bidders are aloud to bid. Like set it up so that you have to authorize the user to bid because you know how there are always one or two jagoffs that have a bidwar up to a few million $
Posted by: Kurt on February 10, 2005 12:06 AMso the money goes to MoFo or you?
Posted by: z on February 10, 2005 05:55 AMz, me.

Posted by: Asa Dotzler on February 10, 2005 07:32 AMwouldn't that be exploiting your position as a member of staff at Mozilla?
and therefore be against company policy?
Posted by: Usman Tilly on February 10, 2005 08:45 AMI see someone offered his $0.02? Well, make that €0.02 (well above the previous bid)! Of course, I will also pay for the delivery!
No seriously, when people buy these kinds of symbols, it's because they are supporting some good cause, rigth? I don't wish to say that you shouldn't make money, it's just that people won't be very interested to give lots of money.
Was that comment really from Asa anyway?
Posted by: Blimundus on February 10, 2005 10:11 AM"out of the drawyer"
"Drawyer"... is that where you keep your legal documents?
I keep my papers in a drawer. ;-)
Posted by: Jeff Wilkinson on February 10, 2005 01:10 PMI would keep it for a few years, _then_ sell it on eBay. :)
Posted by: David Tenser on February 10, 2005 03:33 PMWhy not get a few signed, and put them on Ebay, as a fundraiser for MoFo?
Posted by: Robert Accettura on February 10, 2005 06:10 PMRobert, where's the profit in that for me ;-)
Actually, I think we should award community volunteers with this kind of thing. It's unlikely to raise enough money on ebay to make it worth the trouble.

Posted by: Asa Dotzler on February 10, 2005 06:18 PMI think you should keep any money you get from it!
Posted by: eliot on February 10, 2005 06:52 PMI like what you're saying Asa... like take some of the top people at spreadfirefox and give one of them it- or just have a buncha stuff autographed to give to these people, just for fun.
Who else would do this?
...exactly why you should!
Posted by: Joey on February 10, 2005 07:07 PMAsa,
If YOU'RE looking for a personal profit on this item, you're doing a MAJOR disservice to MoFo and it's community.
Nuff Said. Think Again, Please?
LarryB, "Nuff said" confuses me. I haven't heard anything but an assertion. Care to elaborate?

Posted by: Asa Dotzler on February 10, 2005 07:45 PMAsa,
If you're intending to make a profit on this item, I feel that you're are misrepresenting your position and stature at MoFo for doing so.
It just makes you look like another businessman, rather than supporting the ideals of OSS and the community that makes it happen.
Greed will only create more. I see too many moves of MoFo looking like the early days of M$, and it's heading down the same road. That really disturbes me. I had faith in MoFo...but it's fading. :(
Posted by: LarryB on February 10, 2005 08:20 PMI don't think I've a say in this, but I'll put in my two cents anyway!
I think your readers should know if the autographers (I'm too lazy not to type that but not lazy enough not to type this) knew what they were signing up for (great pun, eh? say it is so!). I'd also like to say IMHO, this is a bad PR move as like you said, it's not likely to generate that much money anyhow.
Best,
Tsee
Tsee,
To answer your question, I personally did not know what I was "signing up" for. I won't pass judgment on the situation, but I felt that was worth putting out there.

Posted by: Blake Ross on February 10, 2005 09:12 PMIt'll be a cool office decoration and good topic starter to spread FF here at eBay. I'll feel damn proud if I could get the bid regardless the money goes for MoFo or one of the people behind FF. You guys should make it a regular supply on Mozilla Store, and submit more copies on eBay as well.
Posted by: Felix Wang on February 11, 2005 05:51 AMPeople take these things way too seriously. It's amazing how some people will attempt to lay some kind of moral judgment on someone for the idea of selling something like this. I really hope that they enforce the same moral standards on every person they encounter and not just Asa. It's disturbing that someone would decide that their "faith" in MoFo was fading because of one insignificant thing, then your "faith" must not be worth much in the first place.
Personally I'd frame it. If I get down that way this year can I get my copy signed for my office wall? Heh.
Posted by: flatrabbit on February 11, 2005 11:05 AMI can settle this easily enough...I believe I'm the one who actually purchased the mag. I think I'll just tuck it away someplace safe and dry if that's okay with you. ;-)
Posted by: Deanna on February 12, 2005 12:47 AMDeanna, that's exactly what I recommended. Then sell it after a few years, when it's worth more!
The reactions here are just silly. Asa isn't just a Mozilla employee, he's a man with free rights and a lovely wife. :) If he wants to sell it, who are you to blame him?
