Today, Thunderbird 1.0 broke the 3,000,000 downloads mark and Firefox 1.0 broke the 22,000,000 mark. Happy day!!
update: Oh, I forgot to mention. We just wrapped up our third month since Firefox 1.0 was released. For the first two weeks, we had an amazing number of downloads, but for the last ten weeks, it's still quite strong -- averaging just over 1.6 million downloads per week. This 12th week was right on track, pulling in 1.62 million downloads. Good times!
update2: Oh, and I forgot to mention ;) Thunderbird's 3 million downloads happened in just 8 weeks. Rock on!
Posted by asa at February 1, 2005 05:52 PMSo which is it, 25 or 22? ;)
Posted by: Gavin Sharp on February 1, 2005 08:52 PMIt's 25 total, 22 of Firefox and 3 of Thunderbird.
Posted by: Kevin on February 1, 2005 09:38 PMThat was tricksy, asa. I though you meant 25 Firefox downloads :P
Posted by: Phill Bryant on February 2, 2005 12:16 AMI didn't get it either :-|
Posted by: David Naylor on February 2, 2005 12:21 AMI believe the download rate is quite good... but since it doesn't go up, it will go down! Wouldn't there be a compaign to put banners on big commercial websites? Or was that not possible?
Posted by: Blimundus on February 3, 2005 01:20 AMI don't agree, with word of mouth and examples by peer, downloads should pick up and the movement shoudl get some strength. Hopefully, TBird will pickup a bit soon. I'm sure when a Calendar is integrated (Project Lightning), TBird downloads will lift-off.
On the Mac front, as soon as you can interface TBird with the built-in Address Book, you'll get more users.
Cheers
Posted by: Ritchie on February 3, 2005 10:12 AMMy personal experience is that there's a ripple effect once you make your friends, co-workers etc aware of FF and TB. I've already 'converted' four people and they are extremely motivated to get their friends to switch as well.
25 mio total downloads is an awesome achievement, considering that it was mainly done through word of mouth... I see no reason why it should stop now that there is already such a large user base.
Keep up the great work!
Posted by: C on February 3, 2005 11:31 AMI would say that there are even more then 22,000,000 people using it. I work for a regional ISP and we send out and recommend both Fire Fox and TBird. I do know that about 30% of your customers have installed and started using Fire Fox. I hope other ISPs are doing the same as we are.
Posted by: Ross on February 3, 2005 11:54 AMI agree with C about the ripple effect that has taken place. I think the overwhelming spyware/adware problems with IE is helping to attract more users to Firefox.
