Seth Spitzer says:
Seth's a great guy, and a big piece of the reason that Mozilla has such a capable email offering. You can find the story and paypal button here. Posted by asa at December 20, 2004 09:27 PMWhenever I start up Thunderbird I think: "I should send email to Scott and David and tell them how much tbird rocks." Instead, I've decided to do two things to thank them:
- Give them a dollar (as a token of my appreciation)
- Give other Thunderbird fans a way to thank them directly
If you want give Scott Macgregor and David Bienvenu a dollar for all the work they've done on Thunderbird, click the "Make a Donation" button below.
The one dollar donation will go into my PayPal account and I'll give it to them.
I was hoping to give them a bit more than $1, but he has it locked to $1 in PayPal. Guess I'll just have to hit the Pay button a few more times... Great idea!
Posted by: eliot on December 21, 2004 06:36 AMEliot said it so well, that I have very little to add except another thank you and to encourage others to give. It really isn't painful, it actually feels good. ;-)
Posted by: Scott on December 21, 2004 07:53 AMThere's actually a button on the bottom of the page that allows you to donate more than a dollar. Only the top one is locked in at a dollar.
Posted by: flatrabbit on December 21, 2004 10:21 AMI just sent in $5 on behalf of myself and the 4 people I have thus far convinced to switch to Thunderbird. This got me thinking about the Mozilla Foundation itself.
Firefox is at 12 million downloads, so even if we chop that in half (accounting for people who install at home and at work) and assume there are 6 million "users" (or "households"), if just 1% of the those users each donated $5 to the Foundation it would come to $300,000. I'm not sure what the yearly budget is like, but that should pay for an employee or three.
I realize that not everyone who uses Firefox comes from a wealthy country where $5 is just a bottle of water or a gallon of gasoline (I kid). Still, if just HALF a percent of US users (I'm guesstimating there are 2 million of them) sign up for the $10/month donation the Foundation will get $100,000 from Firefox users every month. That is $1.2 million a year if just a tiny portion of the users from the wealthiest country can find it in their hearts to drink 2 fewer Venti Frappuccinos a month.
The lizard gets my Starbucks budget from now on. I don't really like coffee that much.
The funny thing is that I was a poor student (home user) when Netscape 3 and 4 were out, so I never bought a copy back then. Now I am commited to giving $120 a year to Mozilla. I guess that back then it was software, but now it is a cause!
Posted by: Kommet on December 21, 2004 11:57 AMI'd be happy to subscribe to the Mozilla foundation too...Heck, DirecTV gets $40 of my money a month, why can't a great browser and email client?
Posted by: eliot on December 21, 2004 05:09 PMflatrabbit - ah! didn't notice that before. thanks for the heads up.
