Sometime yesterday we broke 4 million Firefox PR downloads. All of that in just 25 days. Awesome!
Posted by asa at October 9, 2004 02:21 PMIs there any counting on the moox builds? I prefer to use a German Translation of FireFox, and recommending the MOOX-Build in German to customers ... because the "original" Version is English, which they would not like.

Posted by: Harald on October 10, 2004 12:26 AMAs a completely unofficial build, there won't be any official mozilla.org stats for it. Talk to moox if you want stats for it.
Posted by: Jeff Walden on October 10, 2004 01:52 AMWhere is the legend for the two lines on the graph?
Posted by: Narada on October 10, 2004 02:56 AMThe second bump on the graph starts on October 1, when 0.10.1 was released. What looks like renewed momentum on the graph is really 0.10 users upgrading to 0.10.1 :(
Posted by: Jesse Ruderman on October 10, 2004 04:52 AMA suugestion. Use two vertical axes, or some other approach. It's getting slightly out of hand, comparing the two lines...
Posted by: ces on October 10, 2004 05:11 AMJesse's taken the words out of my mouth.
As long as reinstall (or full install over the current version) remains the way for patching Fx for a substantial portion of users, all it takes to break 10^6*N (where N>1 is an arbitrary positive real number) downloads is to release patches about once in a fortnight to once a month.
Keep 'em coming, MoFo, those 6-zeroes numbers look good for some cheap PR. And I don't mean "Preview Release" by that "PR" either!
Posted by: Grunt on October 10, 2004 08:11 AMJesse, we took a quick look at the number of people downloading 0.10.1 who were using 0.10 user agents and it was very minor. I think it's more likely that we got a boost from the additional media attention, and that we migrated more 0.8 and 0.9 users. There was not a significant number of 0.10 UAs downloading 0.10.1
Grunt, there is a 0.10.1 patch that's only 9K that people can install rather than downloading the entire new version. Downloads of the patch far outnumbered downloads of the new release from 0.10 users.
It's also worth noting that our percentage of downloads coming from IE users is currently about 50% and growing. We're gaining lots of _new_ users here and not just migrating the millions of 0.8 and 0.9 users we already have.

Posted by: Asa Dotzler on October 10, 2004 09:55 AMDon't forget people that hate the first revisions ("point 0" syndrome). They wait for their extensions to get upgraded, and the first big security bug to get fixed to upgrade from 0.9.x.

The lack of precise numbers (or even precise origins of such stats and what's included) is a bit disappointing, but ok.
Care to post here the FULL breakdown on UAs while specifying precisely from what servers those stats come and what ADDITIONAL servers took part in spreading those 4M (but whose UA breakdown you don't provide) and their relative share? Any FlashGets/ReGets/LeechGets/FTP clients/other DL managers in there? And how many of those were configured to say "FlashGet"/"LeechGet"/"whatever" instead of "MSIE 5.0" or whatever?
As per Disraeli, there are lies, damn lies and [the worst kind of lies] - stats. In our case, the situation is made so much worse by the fact that (1) no full stats are available, even to MoFo (2) the stats quoted can't be relied upon (does Opera still come pre-configured to say "MSIE"?).

I may not be an ORGan of anything dot-org, but sometimes I can choose my words carefully enough. I am very well aware of the stand alone patch (I DO tend to hang around other Fx related places, you know), and I said "for a substantial portion of users". Care to add the patch XPI DL stats in addition to ones I mentioned above?
I know for a fact that pretty much everyone I know that is using Fx (majority of them also happen to be "converted" by me, as much as I hate that ugly word!) are still sitting on 0.9.x (waiting for extensions to get updated, for patches, etc), but have dutifully DLed first 0.10, then 0.10.1 - to keep around "just in case", to burn on an install/repair CD-RW, etc. And those who already transitioned to 0.10 patched through the XPI, but ALSO DLed 0.10.1 for the same reason. Oh, and let's not even mention Fx built-in DLs manager in this context, there must be a reason why FlashGot extension zoomed to [global] Top-5 on UMO in no time!
