Our good friend over at Microsoft, Robert Scoble, agreed to add a Firefox button to his weblog if I would add a "I recommend installing XPSP2" link to my blog.
Since I can't think of any good reason why someone would be using XP without SP2, and I can't think of any good reason why someone would be using XPSP2 without Mozilla Firefox, it seemed like a good trade to me.
I've added the link to the new section over on the left titled "I recommend" -- the beginnings of a blogroll of sorts and the sort of thing that I was talking about several days back.
I look forward to seeing which Firefox button Robert chooses for his blog. Maybe he'll go with this one :-)
update: The button's posted. Thanks, Robert.
Posted by asa at September 13, 2004 11:09 PMAsa, read _carefully_ SP2 license agreement, in particular the section relative to WM9... Or if you are lazy, ask Tristan Nitot.
Posted by: Daniel Glazman on September 14, 2004 12:06 AMDaniel, I could care less about the license agreement. I use windows XP and I'm not changing any time soon. That means I need SP2 to not be festering security wound.

Posted by: Asa Dotzler on September 14, 2004 12:08 AMI'd call that a damn fair trade. I'm curious to see which button they use as well. Though, I... umm... doubt they'll go with Asa's suggestion. Heh.
Posted by: John T. Haller on September 14, 2004 12:31 AMThat'll be the same SP2 that borked my machine? Render over half of my installed applications invalid. Yeah great trade!
OK, I KNOW the kudos that having a link from the venerable Mr.Scoble's site is a big selling point, but for chrissakes, they have a marketing budget worth.. well A LOT! And here you are doing it for free. Ach. You are in danger of aligning yourself with a company a lot of people don't like (not me, I think they are pretty darn good at what they do, just that SP2 broke my PC!)... here's hoping it works out as a positive thing. I'm reserving judgement.
Posted by: Gordon on September 14, 2004 01:21 AMSounds like a fair trade to me. I too cant think of any reason someone would not be using XPSP2 and mozilla firefox.
PS: Asa, received your mail about adding a button to my weblog (it was caught by the junk filter...). I already have one on my index page.. but will add one to the blog soon.
Asa: I have a good NAT router/filter, a good free anti-virus, and I never double-click on attachments. I don't need SP2, really. Why do you?
Posted by: Daniel Glazman on September 14, 2004 04:09 AMWell, not everybody has a good NAT router/filter. Recommending SP2 is probably a fair deal for most people.
Posted by: Benoit on September 14, 2004 04:30 AMWhat, Daniel, are you not getting enough viral e-mail and spam from compromised zombie drone machines?
Posted by: pjm on September 14, 2004 07:07 AMpjm, not if he's using Thunderbird ;)
Posted by: Greg K Nicholson on September 14, 2004 09:48 AMAm I the only one still clinging tenaciously to Win2K SP4? What are the compelling reasons to get XP?
Posted by: JP on September 14, 2004 10:51 AMDaniel, Yes you do need SP2... how else would you get NO-ex protection, to mention just one reason.
Our IT department has warned people to stay away from SP2 because they have made some major changes with DCOM. Most of our development with automation is with programs that require reliable DCOM. I believe there is some configuration hoops that can be jumped through to get it working the same as before, but like most technology decisions in the automation industry--if it isn't broken, don't touch it. I'm sure our development will eventually upgrade to SP2, but it'll be a slow move. Most of our company is still using Win2k! We have computers and PLCs from the early 90s still putting out many of the products you eat and drink everyday...they just keep humming away!
Anyway, congrats on the 1.0PR. I'm very excited for how much momentum Firefox and Thunderbird have gained over the last year or so.
Heh JP, I'm also sticking with W2K! XP just looks gay and has some dodgy "features". Which sane mind comes up with a colour combination of blue, green and orange anyway??
Posted by: André on September 14, 2004 12:41 PMGet him to join spreadfirefox so we can see how many people install based off his blog.
Btw: just checked his blog no sight of a firefox button or get firefox link

Posted by: Minh on September 14, 2004 05:46 PMActually, I have a reason not to use SP2 - yet. I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition that I bought off eBay; unfortunately my machine isn't a Dell, so it won't let me register Windows. I would have to install every 30 days, then, but it seems SP2 resets the 30 day clock, I found out on my last install (which has now run out), so now I'm hoping if I wait until the last day of the activation period and install SP2 then, the clock'll reset to 30 days left and I only have to reinstall once every 60 days.

Posted by: Praveen on September 14, 2004 09:51 PMJP: speed and stability. Give your machine a new youth with XP, and I am *not* kidding.
Posted by: Daniel Glazman on September 15, 2004 12:26 AMThe Ff button can now be seen on the Scobleizer blog.
It is in the right column, below the "Top 100 Feed Sites".
The button is also shown in a blog item for September 15, Firefox ships.
"JP: speed and stability. Give your machine a new youth with XP, and I am *not* kidding."
My machine never experiences OS-related crashes, so I'm not really sure how much more stable it could be. As for speed, are there any benchmarks available that show XP besting 2K? I do mainly game development (along with the usual stuff like websurfing and email) and I have yet to see any evidence that those things are faster in XP.
Posted by: JP on September 15, 2004 07:25 AMAlso, ~$200 is pretty freakin' steep for "a new youth" for my machine when it's hardly wheezing with age now.
Posted by: JP on September 15, 2004 08:50 AMThat's a good trade Asa :)
Posted by: Joergen Ramskov on September 15, 2004 01:01 PMFor those who are missing it, he posted this button just above the XML button on the lower right.
