We have automatic plugin install for Macromedia Flash on Windows Firefox!!
update: and we have Linux Flash too! JST kicks ass!
Posted by asa at September 13, 2004 05:19 PMDoes this mean macromedia is onboard with creating xpi's?
Posted by: Robert Accettura on September 13, 2004 06:15 PMHurrah! That's a significant boost for the "Documen-whatnow?" crowd, as well as for the flash-happy segment of the web-dev community.
Posted by: Axord on September 13, 2004 06:34 PMAt last! Honestly, this really was the most frustrating part of getting al my friends and colleagues to switch to Firefox.
Posted by: Robbert Broersma on September 14, 2004 12:29 AMI'm guessing this is just a link to the XPI on Macromedia's site. If we could get redistribution permission, most people I've chatted with would like it added back into Portable Firefox by default. Though a simple auto-install would probably work fine as well.
Posted by: John T. Haller on September 14, 2004 12:30 AMIt's actually linking to packages at update.mozilla.org. The redistribution agreement legal fun was something I had nothing to do with so I couldn't say the first thing about how that works. What I do know is that we're going to host some plugins at umo and that's going to make the firefox user experience so much better.

That was the missing piece :-) Flash-as-XPI has actually been done before unofficially, but we could never publicise it.
Posted by: Gerv on September 14, 2004 01:09 AMWhat about shockwave? Any chance of that being done soon?
Is it possible that whoever made this great peice of software documents how it works? I'd like to know.
Posted by: Martin Alderson on September 14, 2004 12:33 PMWhat about SunJRE?
