I'm desperate (not really, but I'd sure like) to find a free webmail account that supports IMAP and at least 5 MB of space and preferably a lot more. If any of you know of such a thing, please let me know here in the comments.
update: Thanks for all the great suggestions, and especially to Luke, Gerv, David, Steve, and Micahel for the hosting offers.
Posted by asa at August 11, 2004 06:55 PMfastmail.fm: 10MB free (40MB monthly bandwidth). Taglines when you use the webmail client.
Upgrade to 16MB (80MB monthly bandwdith) and no taglines for $15 (one time fee).
Even more storage and bandwidth if you pay yearly. IMAP works for me with no problems.
Posted by: Greg on August 11, 2004 07:20 PMOf course another option is somebody to give you such an account on their own server. If nothing else pans out I'll rescue you though the long term outlook on such account is gonna be quite murky.
Posted by: tekumse on August 11, 2004 07:39 PMSecond that vote for fastmail.fm. Especially if you pay the one time $20 fee their service is outstandingly fast, and their webmail interface the second best I've seen (only to gmail). Fast IMAP, definitely a satisfied customer.

Posted by: George Deka on August 11, 2004 08:02 PMI can give you an account on the server I run; it supports POP and IMAP (both also through SSL) as well as the SquirrelMail webmail front-end. As much space as you reasonably need as well. Just e-mail me if you're interested.
Posted by: Luke Reeves on August 11, 2004 08:03 PMAnother vote for Fastmail.fm. Their free account comes with 10MB storage, IMAP support (with IDLE = immediate new mail notification in TB and Mail&News). Their web interface even supports HTML-mail composition in Mozilla (using MIDAS). I'm paying them $40 a year for much more, but I still consider their other account levels as unrivaled - compared to similarly priced offerings by other services.
There are only two catched with the FM free account:
1. If you use a mail client, rather than their web interface, you need to use your ISP's SMTP server for outgoing mail.
2. 80MB bandwidth per month. Good for a lot of textual correspondence with few attachments, not useful for sending/receiving dozens of video clips every day.
BTW, you can forget about my hotmail address, it's only a pass-through for bugmail. Fastmail can retrieve POP and Hotmail account automatically :-)

Posted by: Prognathous on August 12, 2004 12:29 AMAsa - as before, I'm happy to give you a mailbox on my server. Plenty of space, IMAP, POP and web access via SQWebMail - which isn't sexy, but it does the job. https://tuschin.blackcatnetworks.co.uk/cgi-bin/sqwebmail?index=1 .
Gerv
Posted by: Gerv on August 12, 2004 12:58 AMI'm sure Adam at texturizer.net could set you up with an account if you want. :) (Since I don't own the server myself, I can't promise anything though.)
Posted by: David Tenser on August 12, 2004 04:14 AMhttp://home.se/ is kindof nice, 10 MB IMAP + web. Some connection problems every now and then though...
Try it out, it's free.
I like Fastmail.fm also. It's a really great service. I have been with them for a couple years now and I don't have any complaints whatsoever.

Posted by: Paul_Trier on August 12, 2004 04:35 AMI don't think MyRealBox are accepting new registrations, but if they were I wouldn't bother with them - I used them for about a year and wasn't too happy with the constant downtime and really poor spam and virus filtering.
Posted by: Neil T. on August 12, 2004 05:26 AMAlso recommend fastmail.fm . 10 mb space for free, and some other great features.
The email service has it's own forums at:
http://www.emailaddresses.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=27
Where the developers of the email service frequently participate, so you can suggest improvments, etc.
I have not had any problems whatsoever so far with them. They also have an excellent webmail interface, and are constantly developing new features.
Posted by: FlashBanG on August 12, 2004 06:28 AMWe're a little IT company & we all love Mozilla, so I'm sure I could convince my boss to setup an account for you (IMAP, POP, Webmail). The only problem is it would be @synthesyssolutions.com which is a horrible domain name to type or, worse yet, spell over the phone.
The good news is, we wouldn't set up any hard storage limits on your account. We might get kind of bitchy if you start approaching 100mb though. :)
E-mail me if you're interested.
Posted by: michael on August 12, 2004 07:30 AMHey Asa, much respect for you, I'll give you a 1GB mail account on my server. IMAP and POP access, SquirrelMail web access. And its a nifty @blackproject.org address!
steve@blackproject.org if you are interested.
Posted by: Steve on August 12, 2004 08:18 AMI read something somewhere about http://www.seeqmail.com/ ...
They give 150Mb mailbox, IMAP & POP3 etc. Didn't try it yet, anyone?
I'm pretty sure that hushmail.com has IMAP access. I've not tried it much though.

25MB free, POP3/IMAP/Web
http://www.axentra.com/axentra_net/
I'd like to put a vote in for the SDF Public Access UNIX System. A free account gets 20mb each of email, web, and ftp space. A one-time payment of $36 bumps it up to 100mb. Their membership plans can be found here:
http://sdf.lonestar.org/index.cgi?access
Like it says, just telnet to 'sdf.lonestar.org' to get started.
They used to have a Squirrel Mail web interface, but it went down a month or so ago, since the service is based at a University, I have a feeling that it'll come back up once school gets started. The IMAP and telnet access has never gone down for me though, and once I learned how to use elm over telnet, I didn't need a web interface anyway.
Posted by: Jimmy on August 12, 2004 08:24 PMAnother vote for fastmail.fm. That is *the* service that fits your bill perfectly! (Not going into the details coz a lot of people have already extolled its virtues above). Me been using it for more than 2 years now, and its never let me down.
Posted by: Rakhesh on August 13, 2004 01:00 AMI just found this page the other day, which contais links to a bunch of free hosts:
http://emailaddresses.com/email_pop.htm
Of the ones listed, I've tried a Mailshack account (also called Nerdshack) because it seemed really great--POP3/SMTP (though no Web), and a good amount of space.
Hotpop also sounded OK, but not great, especially with the ads they say you'll get.
Posted by: Robert Morris on August 15, 2004 07:32 PMHere's an alternative to FastMail: Mailsnare.net. Similar prices and services, but includes use of their own SMTP service. Great webmail interface, huge mailboxes, POP/IMAP, virtual domain hostinge, etc. and, very importantly: responsive support forums staffed by the admins. Highly recommended.
