extension migration

Jedbro has a nice write-up on Converting Firefox 0.8 Extensions to the new 0.9 API. I can't vouch for it's thoroughness because I'm not a developer, but it's got lots of nice screenshots and code snippets :) so I assume it's good.

You might be assuming wrong :)

In reality, the most *usefull* parts of my write-up is the install.rdf code as a template, and point 4)"Keeping your extensions compatible with Mozilla Suite and past versions"

Besides that, I'm a pretty crummy at documentation/how-to's.

I hope someone finds it usefull :)
Thanks for posting about it Asa.

At the moment, it seems a shame that someone had to make the new extensions system such a blatent "New Feature". The tab/panel under Tools|Options in 0.8 is quite suitable, and would work wonders if it only had an "Uninstall" button and update facilities. The new dialogue seems disparate and uncoordinated by comparison.

Is the plan to use the new dialogue only for download purposes, to integrate the funky new extensions list (that has the icon, title, description and links) with the existing Options page, or what? Could you please explain why?

I really appreciate the back-end work required to make the effect of extensions more managable, to make them uninstallable, and to get the automatic update checking features that are expected from modern software. I just don't want that at the expense of the "obvious" UI that we currently enjoy.
