the power of about:config

Do you just hate those sites (like mine) that disable toolbars in pop-up windows? It's easy to fix. Just type about:config into the address bar and hit enter. Then type dom.disable_window_open into the about:config filter field to trim the list down to the window_open features you'd like to block. Right-click on any of the items and select modify from the context menu (or double-click on the entry). Just replace the false value with a true value and you're all set.

So how come sites can still hide these bars from users? Hasn't anyone ever thought to add a context menu item or something so that we can easily reveal them again if hidden?

Ross, if you use Mozilla or Firefox, they can't. I happen to think that there are plenty of legitimate cases where a site is handing you something that shouldn't be a full-blown browser window (like my comments window). I'm pleased that Mozilla and Firebird allow me to do that. I'm also pleased that they allow users like you, who don't want me to have any control over the windows created by my site, can disable that.

In Mac Mozilla/Firefox you can show the hidden toolbars on a case by case basis to without setting a pref. Click the oval button button in the right side of the window title bar twice and the toolbar will be shown.

You can do that in Safari too; there are controls for activating or deactivating the various bars under the View menu (with keyboard shortcuts), and as far as I can tell they always work. Personally I think they also ought to display the Aqua toolbar chiclet like Firefox does, but they didn't, for some reason that is not clear to me-- maybe they figured that its meaning would be too ambiguous with multiple bars to enable.
