It appears that I'm not allowed to solicit any funds until I've filed this form 501. The paypal button is on hold while I research this further.
I can't find much on the $3,500. It's not at all clear whether the filing fee is covered by the same rules as other campaign expenditures. I'm not even clear on whether or not I'm allowed to solicit money for that fee.
Posted by asa at August 7, 2003 07:09 PMAs i understand from the "gov-qual.pdf" document of the Secretary of State of California:
- The filing fee is covered by the rules for campaign expenditures, unless you pay the filing fee from your personal money - which you couldnot do, as you clearly indicated.
- Instead of paying $3500, as an "independent candidate" (i.e. not afilliated with a registered political party), you could also have submitted 10000 signatures with your filing papers. Even any "prorated" combination of money and signatures would have been valid. 20 signatures for $7 - Isnīt that a good bargain? In two days, with a number of dedicated people collecting signatures in crowded areas in the cities, you could have got a lot of signatures?
* However, i am not saying that it would have been a good idea to continue this candidacy.
