We're planning on doing a Firebird release based on the Mozilla 1.5a branch. This isn't going to be Firebird 0.7 since we haven't met our goals for features and fixes but we think it's important to get the autocomplete crash fix (and a few other fixes) into the hands of all the people currently using 0.6.
We've made the first round of builds based on the 1.5a branch and they're available for testing: Windows and Linux builds just made it to FTP so grab a build and let us know what you think.
Posted by asa at July 23, 2003 01:49 AMThis biuld is not good. It has the profile manager regression (bug 211860), which is fixed in the latest trunk builds.
It may have other regressions that are recently fixed too, haven't made a thorough test yet.
Posted by: David Tenser on July 23, 2003 03:27 AMIsnt that the latest trunk? Where can i get it?
Posted by: José Jeria on July 23, 2003 04:29 AMThis is a bad idea, Asa. Since the branching of 1.5a (07/11/2003) we have seen some pretty significant checkins, which should be incorporated into a mid-term release.
Fixes include (among others):
bug 212220 - Autocomplete didn't work
bug 206780 - Can't set many non-Western fonts
bug 177618 - Don't add www. and .com when already present
bug 184085 - Update start page to a Firebird specific page
bug 205820 - "Don't ask at startup" fails on multiple profiles
bug 178227 - Can not manually edit Download directory path
bug 212523 - Popup Whitelist is not displaying sites in listbox
In addition the profile manager issue and the autocomplete crash were only fixed after the 1.5alpha branch was done.
I suggest doing a release from the trunk, as has always been done and name it 0.6.5 to mark it as a mid-term release instead of a mere bugfix-release with which the x.x.1-notation is normally associated. We have seen ongoing development since 0.6 was released and IMO this should reflect that.
Posted by: Simon Paquet on July 23, 2003 05:34 AMI'll second djst and Simon opinion.
We should not release 0.6.1 on 1.5a because of poor quality. It was true that 0.6 had JavaScript problem, but 1.5a ever worse.
I suggest releasing 0.7, right now.
Posted by: noririty on July 23, 2003 06:27 AMNoririty, there seems to be an agreement to release 0.7 simultaneously with Mozilla 1.5.
We should release, but from the trunk and not call it 0.7 ;-)
Posted by: Simon Paquet on July 23, 2003 06:38 AMJust to agree with the earlier comments. Some serious regressions were introduced after 0.6, and if they aren't fixed in 0.6.1, it wouldn't be a good idea to release it.
I haven't tested this build yet, but from the dates of regressions and fixes, unless things have been ported over to the branch, I guess it will have bug 210910 (right clicking bookmarks makes folder inaccessible), bug 212523 (popup whitelist broken), bug 211860 (Firebird won't use anything except the default profile, which is generally perceived as losing the profile data completely), and possibly bug 212220 (autocomplete doesn't work at all), all regressions since 0.6.
Probably should have tested before writing this... sorry in advance if I'm wrong about some of those bugs (although the first comment confirms the broken profiles bug, which is probably the most serious)
Posted by: michaell on July 23, 2003 07:14 AMI hope that Firebird 0.6.1 will include full MNG support. Because I cannot(!) thank of non-alpha or non-beta state software from Mozilla.org without MNG support.
MNG support shouldn't be removed anyway...
Posted by: Little Penguin on July 23, 2003 10:41 AMSimon, so, how about call it 0.8 ;-p
I want skip 0.7 if there is an agreement.
I hate to complain about a wonderful browser, but the introduction of AutoScroll support in recent builds has somewhat broken the ability to open new tabs by middle-clicking. On the other hand, the Autocomplete bug is pretty serious, and the fix needs to go out as soon as possible, so...
Posted by: jacob on July 23, 2003 03:34 PMI just hope this does not hose the transition towards completely separate apps. Already, it has been said that 1.5 will stil be the suite and that a full blown Browser (and perhaps therefore Mail) will take another year. This seems to me like more of the same.
I got a nightly build released very late on 7-20-03 being billed as 0.8 on the Firebird website and it seems very stable, I push it very hard with multiple tabs running Java apps & the like as well as the auto comeplete running with no crashes at all. So far it r0cks!
Caetck
We shouldn't use 1.5a for the release
We should just do like we've always done, but call it 0.6.1
We REALLY need to be able to toggle autoscroll before we release anything, because that feature is bugging the hell out of me. (Patch is there, check it in)
The fixing of the Pref UI would also be a nice thing in 0.6.1
Release 0.6.1 from trunk, not 1.5a
I'm very glad to see you still take care of this beautiful brower.I use Firebird 0.6 every day.And feel it not only easy to use but also stronger than before.Thank you all!!!
Posted by: jump on July 26, 2003 10:41 AMAny idea when is a Mac build coming? Even a nightly would be nice... :-)
Posted by: Xslf on July 28, 2003 04:35 AMsomehow, on win98 (sony vaio branded) this build seems to not work and simply stops responding. Running an Intel PII 233MHz/128MB RAM
